I suffered from two small bowel obstructions this month. One at the beginning of February and I just got discharged yesterday from the second. I didn't think the second one was going to clear and was set to get transferred to CC. While I was waiting for an available bed there, the stoma woke up and I chose to stay in Michigan until this Wednesday when I leave for CC.

I had to have a new stoma reconstructed last June due to my stoma narrowing. I used to think if the j-pouch didn't work out, I would be okay with the bag, but now all these obstructions are scaring me. I can only pray this j-pouch will be a success.

Sorry to hear you've had so much trouble. Hopefully your upcoming take down goes off without a hitch, and you'll be feeling good in no time!

One thing to keep in mind....I'm guessing your J Pouch is already constructed, which would mean you currently have a loop ileo. I have heard those can be much more tempermental and tough to manage, compared to end ileos. So, in the very small chance that your J pouch didn't work out, maybe and end ileo wouldn't give you so much grief?

I agree with UCW. Not only are loops tough to manage but loop ileos are far more prone to SBOs than you'll be after reconnection. Do you know if the obstructions have been occurring right behind the stoma? There's sort of a "corner" there that will go away completely once the ileostomy is closed.

You could have a BCIR if the J pouch doesn't work.

Anyways, I'll try my best to avoid any external bag if I can. I don't feel that's for me.



Candidates for the procedure are:
◾Patients who have problems associated with the conventional (Brooke) ileostomy.
◾Patients who have failed continent (Kock) pouch, failed Ileal Pouch Anal Anastomosis (IPAA), J-Pouch, Pull-through or other similar procedures.
◾Individuals who have Familial Polyposis (FP), a case of medically unresponsive Ulcerative Colitis, poor anal sphincter control or other conditions precluding their being candidates for the J-Pouch, or those who elect not to have the J-Pouch.

After my stoma revision in June, my surgeon turned my loop into a "loop-end." It looks like an end, but it located where a loop would be. I did not have issues with my end ileo, so it possible the stoma type is the culprit. My obstructions were located behind the stoma.

I am not sure I want to mess around with other procedures like BCIR. My takedown will be my 7th surgery. If that doesn't work, I will go back to the end and leave it at that. My wedding is in October, so my j-pouch needs to be well behaved by then.

It probably depends on where the obstructions are occuring as to whether a jpouch would get rid of them. If it's 10 feet away from your stoma, then the jpouch will probably lead to clogs too :(. CC will figure it out.

Surgery is the 7th. I am leaving tomorrow since my barium enema test is at 9AM on the 6th. My scope looked good in January, so I am confident the barium enema will look good also. I ordered my bidet off Amazon last night. I just have to pack my things and hope for nice weather. Michigan has been getting hit hard with snow this winter.

Sara, so sorry you've had so many problems; you really have been through a lot.

I had an obstruction a few weeks ago and was hospitalized -- quite a miserable thing, awful to have multiple ones.

Hope surgery and recovery go very smoothly. I'll be thinking of you.

That team at CC is phenomenal! I went there for a consult two years ago, but we were transferred back to the Rockies so I opted to find a colon rectal surgeon in the West closer to home. You will be in some of the most expert care in the nation with them, and I will keep you in my prayers for a perfect outcome! Travel safely, and believe in a great result!

So sorry about your problems. I have an end and keep having sbo's. I understand your frustration.

I wish you the best in your upcoming surgery, fast healing! Despite this, it does seem like your moving in the right direction and everything will be fine! Will be thinking of you!

The pouch looks good. It does have a slightly different shape because I had a sinus tract and my surgeon made the cavity a part of the pouch. I have received nothing but exceptional care at CC. The doctors there are on a whole other level. My arrival is 7am. It is so weird that the bag will be gone.

3 days post op...no gas or BM yet. Just a lot of gas pain in my abdomen.

Oh brother! Sorry to hear that. I'm sure you know the drill... lots of walking, try chewing gum, sitting up as much as possible (instead of laying in bed). Are you allowed to take Gas-X?

I didn't pass gas or feel an urge to have a BM before the first time... I was just on the toilet to urinate and suddenly had liquid output from my pouch. I think it was 2.5 days post-op. I hope it happens for you soon :)

Keep walking as uncomfortable as it is. It's the best way to get things moving.

I think I've walked literally miles in the past four days. If nothing happens by tomorrow I will get an x ray but my labs and everything look good.
