Numbness

My entire right leg went numb after my ileostomy procedure. They never explained what caused it--possibly a nerve got pinched while lying on the operating table--but it did eventually regain feeling. It took much longer than expected to get back to full function, but it did. The advice I was given was to practice some leg exercises. The one that worked best for me was leg raises. You can do them while lying down or sitting. If you're sitting, try to move your foot upward until it is in line with the rest of your leg. If you're lying down, try and raise your foot towards the ceiling. You may not be able to do it at first--I couldn't-- but with time you should see movement and regain muscle control. My thigh and parts of my abdomen were numb for months, but all of the feeling eventually came back. The doctor said it had something to do with temporary nerve issues caused by lengthy surgery in awkward positions :)
