Jogging with an Ilieostomy

I just completed my surgery in Dec 2013 to remove the rectum/anus and now have my checks sewed together. I'm also in physical therapy due to the surgery for scare tissue in my glutes and weakened core muscles.

Yesterday I tried bringing myself up to a light jog on the tread mill (4.0 mph) but it felt horrible. I felt like my caboose was flopping around and it stung where the incision is located. I guess now that my checks are sewed together (there was no need for a flap) one is pulling the other causing the incision to sting.

I've heard of people being able to perform in marathons with an ostomy but now I'm concerned that I may not be able to even do a 10K.

Is it just too soon after surgery to make this decision? Does anyone else have issues with walking/jogging after surgery?

That's been 3 months so it shouldn't still be hurting, but I can see it might be annoying. I have run the treadmill and outside and been fine. Might want to ask the Dr just in case.

Thanks for the encouragement! Guess it's just gona take some time. I had my 30 day PT eval and they recommended 8 more weeks!

The incision only hurt when I tried to jog or when I sit too long then it starts stinging. These are the stitches keeping my cheek together. I have another incision from my belly button down and that's a thick red line. I still cut my ostomy barrier so not to cover the front incision.

Was also thinking of going to a dermatologist to look at the incisions. I am using Vit E cream...just started on both incisions. The therapist asked me "Why did they have to sew your butt cheeks together?" However she gave me the idea to massage the are to loosen it up. I just got one of those foam rollers with bumps in it. I guess I'll be rolling on it with my bum! lol

I can clinch my muscles back there and I've been in physical therapy for 6+ weeks. I'm up to 30 lbs on the glute machine at the gym. I think using the Vit E cream and massaging that area is helping. The part that hurts is the incision. I may have some scare tissue that developed from it.

The flopping wasn't the muscle but the cheeks themselves. Normally the work independently from each other and in the opposite direction. So now one cheek is yanking the other down when it should go up....very very strange! I didn't have a flap so I guess they are "closer together" than those with a flap.

I also had the sphincter muscles removed...so my glutes were cut into and I'm sure there scare tissue from that too. I'm surprised they removed that muscle. One surgeon told me they only remove it for cancer patients. I had no cancer.

I do hope it just that I need time to heal! We'll see!!

So can anyone else relate to all this?

I spoke with the nurse today. Looks like the stinging pain is due to nerve ending. It takes a long time to generate new nerve ending. Looks like I just need to be patient. I should notice a difference in 6 months! Three more to go!
