So what do you all think?

So it's been about 7-8 weeks post colectomy for me and everything with my end ileo is great. My GI is now treating the inflammation left in my rectum which they are trying to clear up before jpouch construction in July. Post surgery the symptoms of the inflammation was just passing a small amount (tblspn) of mucous every couple of days, when I would pass it is have some cramping and my rest in would feel like it would "push" hard and I'd have to clinch it because I have this unjustified fear of prolapse since it's just a stump.

Anyways, they gave me Canasa suppositories to do for a month and I'll get scoped on April 9th. I've never really done well with mesalamines in general especially when I was on enemas, it felt like it exacerbates things. So I've been doing these things nightly for almost 2 weeks and the past few days I've been noticing blood and a lot more liquid (not sure the exact size maybe a cup? But significantly more than before) that's a bit darker. Also, the pushing sensation is really strong like my body is trying to force something out so I have really squeeze so I don't keep pushing, it's really weird.

Obviously I'm calling my GI on Monday but I was wondering if it might be a mesalamine intolerance or could it be making things worse in there? Has anyone experienced this? I'll post an update when I hear from the GI. In the meantime I'm going to stop the suppositories until I get some answers.

Wondering why you would consider a j pouch, when you already have rectal stump problems. I imagine the surgeon is telling you that once the pouch is hooked up, everything will be fine. Speaking from experience, if it doesnt turn out fine, then you had better prepare yourself for some real misery.

Hey Rabbit, I think I've mentioned before that I had exactly the same problem after Step 1. I tried Canasa suppositories too and all they did was increase my urgency -- in fact I even had an accident with the blood/mucus after using Canasa, which I really thought would be all in my past after surgery.

In any case, I stopped the Canasa after that. Without the additional problems from the Canasa the symptoms were annoying, but not unlivable. Not sure if you have this issue as well but I also had low grade fevers from the residual inflammation. I asked my GI if I should use Cortifoam since that was the only rectal that had worked for me in the past, but she said that it was better to leave the inflammation than to weaken the tissue with topical steroids right before surgery.

I would also strongly disagree with gmark. All UC patients have rectal inflammation, it's a hallmark of the disease, it doesn't mean that all j-pouches are going to fail. I do have mild cuffitis on and off, I think, but knowing what I know now it absolutely doesn't make me regret going for a j-pouch. Some small percentage of patients end up with unacceptable quality of life issues and/or failed pouches, and the only traits that we've found to be statistically significant for predicting those are Crohn's disease and perianal disease.

It's interesting because I had a two step procedure which means my rectum was removed in my first step and the j pouch was created. I was flaring really badly going into surgery (my rectum too) but everything went fine. I did develop an abscess two weeks later in my pelvic area. I wonder if that would have been avoided had I been in better shape going into surgery. One never knows. I'm sure your second step will go on as planned.

That's good information pluot,I'm not sure what my surgeon is planning but those are things I will certainly ask her.

Hello, new to this, not very good at this sort of thing, but am so excited to finally had found others going thru the same issues!!! Have has uc 15 yrs, major flare up 2007,tried anything and everything nothing worked, ended up j.pouch, constant rectal pain, no stomach issues, live on pain meds. Has been unbearable the last 3 months, ended up on e.r last week,was given antibiotics, has helped, but I know it is coming back. I have not been able to work for the last 5 months. I have given up hope! There is no quality of life! I have seen so many drs, they do not know anything! Was told just get a per ileostomy. I just can not believe that just because of only having rectal pain. Maybe I just do not understand!
Also, has anyone surgeon told them to use anal dialators to keep the rectum open? So much more to say, but I know this is enough. Thank you for any advice!!!!
