Hi,
I had a proctectomy in January and am looking for an ointment that will help my perineal area not be so dry. Any suggestions?
Thank you.

Calmoseptine ointment is the best, I think. You can also try diaper rash ointments. Lots of choices.

Hi, quick question: is your butt sewn up?
I had an anal closure and at one point my butt was extremely dry - but I was told to NOT put anything on it. You don't want the sutures to dissolve before they are ready to.
Just make sure it is ok to apply an ointment before you do :)

Hi Sue - Thanks for the suggestion. I bought a tube of Calmoseptine this morning and tried it out. The menthol in it was pretty uncomfortable so I'm not sure if I'll use it again. Did that bother you at all?

Mine is also sewn shut and is getting more dry as it heals. My sutures have already dissolved so it's all good in that respect. I just notice a little tugging when I'm sitting and trying to get comfortable.

OK, whew, glad to hear it's healed up before putting stuff on it - last thing you need is to gunk it up and infect it.
Once mine was healed I bought vitamin E gelcaps - I would poke a hole in it and gently rub it into my "butt crack". It helped soften up the scar tissue and flatten the area out.

Yeah - the last thing I need is an infection there
. Good idea about
the Vitamin E. I'll try that.

I was using something called "Butt Paste" or something. It's for babies but is helpful as I still have to use it sometimes. This was for when it's weepy, my PT told me that just dryness could be helped by a tiny bit of Aquaphor.

Calmoseptine burned me like the dickens too. You don't need anything like that, that is a barrier cream meant to protect the skin from discharge (which you don't have anymore!). The Vitamin E sounds good to me, I find most surgeons have their own preferred product though so maybe give yours a quick call.

Yup, I had the tugging and pulling sensations long after my sutures dissolved. There are layers of internal sutures that heal as well (this keeps things from splitting
open once the superficial sutures or staples are no longer present) and just like with any other incision, little bits of scar tissue forms and tears over and over again as we move.
I found that my butt got much more comfortable at about
the 4 month mark, and lots of walking and gentle butt crack massage with Vitamin E (I'm not even kidding!) helped break up the forming tissue and provide relief.
At six months out I can now walk, sit, workout, etc with no issues, other than phantom rectal pain that comes and goes.
I hope your butt continues to heal well :)
