bowel prep with Ileostomy?

If had to do two bowel preps when I had my ileo, one for a colonoscopy and one for the reconnection. For the colonoscopy, the nurse for the GI doc I was using gave me all the various pills to take and crud to drink. I took one of the pills and kept on a liquid diet of home-made chicken soup and lime Jello. Within about two hours, everything going into my bag was green with the Jello. I called the GI doc to ask if I still needed to do all the other nasty stuff and he said no. When I had the reconnection surgery, the surgeon asked what I did for the colonoscopy and when I told her, she just laughed and said, do that again. I did everything the same except this time, everything flowing into the bag was yellow, because I changed to lemon Jello this time.

I had an end ileo when I went in for my second surgery, and I did a clear liquid diet the day prior and then fasted starting at midnight the day of surgery. Even without the bowel prep (so no laxatives), I was so dehydrated by the time of surgery that it was VERY difficult to place my IV -- three different nurses used me as a pincushion (including both wrists, ouch) before my surgeon walked in and insisted on placing the IV himself. I got so dehydrated just from clear liquids and fasting, I think I probably would have needed to go to the ER for hydration before the surgery if I had taken a bowel prep.

Personally I would insist on discussing it with the surgeon or at least a nurse to get someone to agree you don't need it... Those pre-op instructions are boilerplate and most people have a colon, usually if you talk to anyone with medical training they will say the bowel prep is not for you.

They simply dont understand that we without colons need very little prep. I had a scope of the small bowel through the stoma and had clear liquids from noon before with miralax prep and it was overkill. To give a regular/full prep as if one still had a colon is just stupidity.

I have an ileoscopy scheduled in July and I had my GI confirm (again) today if I still need to take a bowel prep and he said yes, but it'll only be one sachet of Pico-Salax in the AM before the scope (not two like with a colon prep).

I'm concerned about dehydration too, but I'll be chugging down sports drinks for the 24h leading up to it.

I called my surgeon and left a message and am awaiting a return call about this. I think doing a bowel prep is for people with colons and colostomies. I would be so dehydrated if I even drank a cup of that crap.

No prep when you have an ileostomy, it is actually dangerous. I was told liquid diet the day prior and then nothing at all after midnight.

I got the return call from the doctor and he said I only have to do liquids 24 hours in advance, no bowel prep is necessary. I am so relieved because I always throw up that nasty stuff. :)
