Blockage?

Okay, so I had blockage or an obstruction the other day.  I woke up in the night with excrutiating pains/spasms around or behind my stoma.  I got up (even getting up and walking was painful) and drank some hot herbal tea to try to get things moving, then got in a hot shower.  Eventually some stuff came exploding out. 

I guess my question is...how long should I let a blockage go on before going to the ER?  It hurt so bad that it scared me that something was going to happen.

I guess that really depends on how much pain you are in and/or how long you go with no output at all. I, fortunately, never had to go to the E.R. - hot broth always did it for me eventually.

You should have gone in if it hurt that much.

I wrote about my last blockage on my blog (won't post a link or I'll get in trouble)

I waited way too long before going it, but I couldn't go sooner. Blockages can turn dangerous pretty fast, so it's always better to be safe than sorry.

Did you figure out what caused your blockage? The lessons learned when you get one are important.

I have been hospitalized 4 times for a blockage. I tried everything to no avail. The last blockage, I stuck it out at home and that was a HORRIBLE idea. The ordeal was very dangerous in the end before it unblocked and I will never do that again. I can't pinpoint why each one occurred, it's most likely scar tissue because I didn't eat anything that went undigested that would cause this. The pain can get so bad and unbearable, along with the nausea, that's where you must go in then. Once you start vomiting, and at home, your window going to the hospital and waiting to be admitted becomes dangerous.

I just had a blockage and the pain was excruciating. I will never wonder what a blockage feels like. It was terrible and my doctor's office sent me home to walk and an all liquid diet. Very unfair if you ask me.

But after 2 days of lots of pickle juice and unsweetened ice cream, I dumped about a gallon of green water in 24 hours. Yikes

I am gonna try a little coconut oil in my coffee everyday to see if this helps with lubricating the small bowel. I think I read others use this.

Any other tricks up anyone's sleeve to avoid these the dreaded sbo's?

I just had surgery June 12 for parastomal hernia repair and stoma revision. I'm guessing mine was caused by adhesions????

I had also eaten large amounts of watermelon. Not a good idea and watermelon is currently on my list of NoNo foods. Argh

     I've had partial blockages from time to time due to nuts and, like last night, corn on the cob.  I try to chew thorougly, but that darn corn must glue itself together once it hits the stomach smhair .  I noticed that if I gently press around the stoma, the corn will pop out.  Think today I will stick to string beans. :-)

Christine: It is funny in a way, but if I eat corn "on the cob" I can be guaranteed of a blockage that evening, yet creamed corn or nibblets does not affect me,and I have had my iliostomy 14 years now.
