I have a personal situation in which is was recommended from my Doctor to take an anti-anxiety medication to help me through it. I have taken Effexor XR in the past before my ostomy but it's extended release.
Has anyone taken an-anti-anxiety med with an ileostomy? Did it work?

Not anti-anxiety, but some of my meds have had to change as they would pass straight out of the stoma with bring digested. I have seen intact pills come out.
I would think slow-release meds would be particularly susceptible to this, although I'm no medic.
In particular, the Loperamide that I take is the capsule form, and
I have to break the capsules
open to take them (on a piece of cracker with a dab of butter)

If I recall correctly, there should be a type of anti-anxiety that you can dissolve under your tongue. I think it's lorazepam. Best to ask your doctor or pharmacist for one that either dissolves under the tongue or quickly in your GI (non coated).

Thanks VeganOstomy. I read that lorazepam (Ativan) is for panic attacks. I got a doctors appt in a few hours so I"ll add this to the list.

I just started my prescript
ion meds so taken herbals are out of the question as there can be reactions.
It's not my ostomy that causing me issues it's the compounding of life events on top of it which I have been dealing with for the past 2 years such as death of my father, rejection from my mother/sister, workplace issues due to having a medical condition, car accidents, trying to heal from the multiple surgeries performed within a year's time...it's been nuts!
The drugs do make m belly upset and a bit head-achy. I'm taking it slow and steady as I know it's gona take time to adjust to the meds.
Thanks for the support!

Thats my current cocktail! Venlafexine (?) And alprazolam.
The V drug is Effexor. I have XR... which I was told at ileostomy surgery discharge by two of the pharmacists would not be an issue.
by I saw the little balls in my output... and started taking 12 hour naps and complete time loss so im getting off the crap. Very VERY scary drug.
I had no idea what it wad capable of until after surgery.
I have not taken my alprazolam since the effexor issues started. But now that I am tapering off... im excited to have my anxiety med back. Its a great low dose pill for when you feel the anxiety coming on. Or to help calm the mind at bedtime. Or facing a situation you know will give you anxiety...
There are lots of meds to try :)

Be careful with Venlafaxine/Effexor, I came off it due to short term memory loss. That was a fairly high dose of 75mg twice a day though, 37.5mg twice a day was fine.

Well that didn't last long! By day 5 I was so sick I stopped. Felt better the next day, but then tossed my
cookies two days later. Luckily my situation got better. I hate meds! I seem to be very sensitive to them.

A friend of mine takes a quick acting anxiety med, I think it's the dissolvable in your mouth type. It's Clonazapam (sp?), aka Klonopin. Supposed to work in like less than 30 minutes, but not sure how long it lasts.
Just a thought.
Hope you find something that works for you!

When I had my temp ileo, I was on lexapro 20 mg and an SSRI Buspar. I was just on the lexapro but the anxiety of cancer and surgeries were too much so they added the Buspar 5mg 3x a day. It worked :)

Lorazepam, generic for Ativan, works well for me. Plus it allows you to relax better at night. No digestive issues at all.
