Allergic reaction to Hollister Stoma paste

How many of you get red and raw places around your stoma where the paste sits? I had this issue and was referred to Hollister Adapt rings, part number 7805, which contain no alcohol. Bingo, the redness went away. They work well and sometimes do spring a leak but usually after doing something dumb like leaning over with a fuller bag. My question is this, are there other solutions that you have found to work well? Also a tip to new ostomy users, don't drink Hawaiian punch flavored Gatorade and then panic when you see a totally red bag as the food dye processes through the small intestine. It looks like you are bleeding to death.

How do you prevent your bag from getting wet in the shower? I was told I could shower with it on with no worries but to my dismay, not so! It seems like ostomy nurses really aren't sure. Lots of different opinions! I use one half of a large sandwich bag. At the top I place two strips of Johnson & Johnson waterproof tape. I place it over my bag like a small canopy. Once I have attached it to my stomach I then seal it at the top with a piece of Nextcare Absolutely Waterproof tape. Works every time. Why the extra piece of tape? Nextcare is stretchy and allows movement without springing a leak. Johnson & Johnson not so much. Why Johnson & Johnson? It sticks very well to the sandwich bag plastic but not so well on the skin. Nextcare doesn't stick well to the sandwich bag. Simple elegant solution.

I use ConvaTec stomahesive, which I guess is similar.

I don't shower with a bag on - I have once - but I shower and change the bag at the same time, so shower without it. The stomahesive is water soluable, so isn't going to do it much good. I change the bag every other day, so only shower every other day, which is not ideal, but bearable for now (my stoma is temporary). It is really nice having a shower without the bag (as long as the stoma is not active).

Had no real problems reacting to the paste, seems to work without side effects as far as I can tell. Everything looks clean and well when I shower and clean the area.

I've found several foods can produce output that worryingly looks like blood - yesterday I found that eating chorizo does it, produces a red oil. i'm sure there are lots of others.

You shouldn't have problems with the wafer failing with a shower/swimming/bath.

Do you use Skin Prep of any kind? If you do keeping that to just the area around the stoma should prevent the water failure issue.

They are a waterproof/breathable membrane that goes over your wafer to maintain it's integrity.

Personally, I shower daily (sometimes multiple times) and am very active/athletic, without wafer failing.

Also, another note: The most directions in the box with your wafer say to not get them wet for 24 hours.
