It's very noticeable because of the scar and discoloration. I actually have an appointment tomorrow with a Plastic Surgeon because I had an open surgery and have a huge raised scar next to my belly button. And the scar above my pubic bone hurts sometimes if my belt/pants rub up against it. I'm going to ask the plastic surgeon if he can do anything for the site where my ostomy was.
I still don't understand why a lot of surgeons leave that gaping hole
open to heal like that. Yes, yes I know they say because of infection but just as many surgeons choose to close the site and it's fine. I guess it's personal preference on their part. You are at risk for infection either way. Mine was loosely sutured closed and it healed so nicely you can barely see the scar. The surgeon left it
open and I got a small abscess near the surgery site, I was in the hospital for a 11 days for my take-down because of the infection. He had planned for a closed wound but he looked at my skin (bacteria from stool) around the stoma and said that he was worried that if he closed it that the site would get infected.
Before the surgery he all ready said that he would refer me to a Plastic surgery because of the previous
open colectomy surgery which resulted the big scar. The CR surgeon said that the plastic surgeon would probably take care of this scar for me too, so I wasn't too upset by this.
