Odor Problems

I don't know what your story is but the foods you eat certainly affect the "smell" of your bm.  I was told any thing that has a strong smell going in will have a strong smell coming out. (Like cabbage, brocolli,etc) and I have also found that crab meat for some reason really smells.  If you have a colostomy there are products to reduce the smell and they do help ( such as M9 drops) I have also heard that mouth wash works well too.  Hope this helps you out a bit.

One month post op and the smell has diminished substatially for me -- don't know when your surgery was.

I know it is gross but it happens a lot I think with ostomies. I had to ask my surgeon about it because it had gotten so bad! He said that the odor sometimes happens when it takes the food (or whatever it turns into) a long time to get through the plumbing. Bacteria builds up and voila, stink beyond belief. I have found a few things that you can put in the pouch that help. One is something called stop odor (I know, they need a new marketing rep) and my insurance actually covers it. I think I order it through convatec or one of the supply companies. It is a blue liquid and you put a few drops in the pouch each time you empty it. I found the bottle totally inconvenient so I emptied an eye dropper bottle and put the stuff in there, it is easy to carry around. There is another product that is a white powder, can't remember the name of it. Both things worked really really well. My whole family is thankful for it :)

in 1989, i had my colon removed and they reattached me. (just like you) it lasted 14 years but i was never right. They wanted to give me an ileostomy back then... I finally had it done last year because the crohns reappeared mainly as fistula and abcess near the connection and i had a sprinkler system with openings around my rectum was very bad and worst pain. After the ileostomy, and then having my rectum removed im very well...odor depends on food as been said, but at your stage, it is not attributable to just food, i used cipro and flagyl together to get me by, but i eventually had the ileostomy surgery. The fatty foods are gonna do that. If they want you to use metamucil it can be sweeter... what meds yu on if any? im new member in crohns rm usually... i have my email activated if yu wanna talk, Mike

I have heard of people carrying matches with them and light one after emptying their pouch. The sulfur in the match takes the odor away. I've never tried it, but it might be worth a try!
