Seeing colorectal surgeon today

      I've been having discomfort inside the anus for the better part of  a month now, so I am heading to a new colorectal surgeon (mine retired) this afternoon.  Hope and pray I don't have to have the anus removed...ugh.  Rectum and colon already went bye byes in 2010, but anus stayed.  It's behaved itself for the most part except for a hematoma shortly after my surgery back in 2010, which Dr. Fry suctioned out in his office shocked .  Now I feel like I have a small army of something making camp inside the anus...hope it isn't ISOS.  I'll know this afternoon....waaaaa...I'm scared!  Gettin too old for this nonsense.

Hang in there Christine. Sometimes meeting a new doctor can be a blessing:-)

There may be medication (if you want to go that route) that can help your situation before having to go the surgery route...just ask all the questions before you have to make a decision...and let us know how it goes!

Good luck, Christine! I totally understand how it feels to NOT want to have the anus removal/sew up surgery, and I am always worried I will have to eventually. I hope this GI figures out a simple reason for your problems, and a quick and easy solution!

What are the symptoms?

My rectal symptoms are getting worse. I'm passing a lot more mucus than I used to, and quite often there is blood in it now. I really really don't want to have a proctectomy.

NCOT~ I have been having the same symptoms, and I don't even have a rectum...just an anal stump. I've always passed a bit of mucous, but a month or 2 ago it increased a lot. Now it has gone back down some, but anytime I pass any at all, it is bright red! Little red balls in the toilet, red when I wipe. I really don't want to have the rest removed and get sewn up...and I have some major health stuff going on right now that nobody can figure out completely, so surgery is probably not even an option. UGH!

     Well, saw the YOUNG surgeon...geez, I am either getting OLD or these new doctors are getting younger.  He anuscoped me shocked .  For good measure he even blew air up there  shocked !  Thought I would pass out, but hung in there.  He said the skin inside the anus looks healthy...no lumps, bumps or anything that looks suspicious.  The skin tag is still there, but that's been there since my UP days and he agreed with my former surgeon that it is not precancerous and would probably be more painful if removed.  He asked if I had a family history of rectal cancer, and when I told him my paternal grandmother died from rectal cancer, he became a bit more concerned.  He told me he could do biopsies, but, that would have to be done over at the hospital as an outpatient procedure and under anesthesia.    I have to think about this.  Joan Rivers situation makes me a tad more reluctant to go under, especially if he didn't see anything of immediate concern.  What DOES worry me a bit is the bleeding from my vagina which happened during my ride home from the office and is still going on.  I am wearing a kotex pad as I write this.  I told the surgeon that I still spot a bit, but, have been checked out by my gyn doctor on several occasions and everything was fine.  I asked could this possibly be a fistula and neither the surgeon or resident who assisted him thought it so.   However, tonight and following the exam, it is NOT just spotting.  It is red blood.

     So, here I sit, pondering what to do next.  I know I will call tomorrow to report this blood coming out my vagina.  Anyone think there may be a tear somewhere between the anus and vagina? UGH...this drives me semi nuts.

      The physician's assistant called today, he was also the assistant to Dr. Fry, so I totally respect his opinion.  He told me since I still have my anus and had active UC in the rectum (which was removed and I only have a stump), that the UC could have returned to the anus and that could be the reason I am experiencing some discomfort "down there".   So, with this in mind, I decided to go ahead and have the anus biopsied to make sure there is no cancer.  Having this done on October 3rd.  Better to be safe than sorry.  Just keeping my fingers, toes and whatever else I can cross and saying lots of prayers that everything will be ok.

     We still cannot figure out why the blood came out the vagina after my procedure yesterday.  Maybe a small hole somewhere.  They cannot go into the rectum and I already have been seen several times by my gyn doctor (several of them) and everything in that department looks fine.  Oh well.

Well Christine I hope they can help you. Are you still bleeding?

I will say good luck for the 3rd now as I will likely still be out of it from my surgery.

     Thank you Larasmom.  I am no longer bleeding.  The only time I bled was after he anuscoped me.  I had a small amount of yellowish mucus come out yesterday, but nothing today.  Had my cardiogram today and that checked out fine.  Waiting for the script for blood work.
