Anyone had an ileoscopy?

I have one on Friday. Interested in others' experience....

Did you get to see it at all or were you out the whole time? I liked it when I could see the screen during a flex sig (and sometimes a colonoscopy).... just was helpful to have a picture of why I was sick....

Was it messy at all? Seems there's always something coming out of my stoma.....

I think my GI must have cleaned up any mess because when I woke up, my stoma was super clean. Some gas and a tiny bit of blood. I was also very anxious, but everything turned out well!

My doc just popped the pouch off when she scoped me, and she saved it so I could reuse it. I brought extra supplies just in case and I used a new bag but left the wafer on until my usually scheduled pouch change.

I was supposed to get one while I had a temp ileo after sigmoid volvulus surgery. After it was done, my surgeon called with smoke coming out of ears (even on the phone) and said the GI doc screwed it up. To make matters worse, they had no supplies for a new oleo bag so my wife had to come in with a fresh bag which the staff had no idea how to put on. LOL. Never followed up with that GI again.

I would bring back up supplies just in case. I had my scope done at the hospital where I had surgery and KNEW they had the same appliances I used and getting a back up from them was still a hassle.

They ended up being able to keep my wafer on, but said they do sometimes need to remove it for various reasons (one in particular being a lot of output messing up the seal).

May I ask why you are having this done?

Funny, I was just thinking today about what kind of "routine care" I might need after surgery. I know you are talking about an ileostomy, and I will have a colostomy, so I'm guessing it will be different for me. Not trying to take over this thread, but just wondering, for a colostomy, does a person still have to do the typical "after age 50, have a colonoscopy every-so-many-years" thing? And I'm guessing prep is involved?

Hi everyone, well I'm prepped (i.e. no food since breakfast yesterday, no liquid since midnight) and ready to go, which means loop-de-loopy.... dehydrated, bile-producing, and a little gassy.... presuming I'm getting an IV soon with this.... I have to be there at 6:45 am, which is in an hour and a half....

I'm having the scope because I've been having bowel obstructions (8 this year, three w/ER trips, I have another thread on it). Last week I had a small bowel follow through which showed that I have a narrowed area of bowel behind my stoma, which is probably from adhesions, but the scope is to check whether it's from Crohn's. As I understand, which might be off a little (this has all been a bit rushed) if the scope shows IBD inflammation, there might be a medical solution (awful poison drugs again).... but I get the sense that's unlikely (no other signs of Crohn's plus never had it in my small bowel) and probably I'm going to need surgery.

For me it's kind of like bad option #1 an bad option #2, as people keep asking me what i'm hoping for..... I tend to think that Crohn's returning is worse than another surgery (although the surgery will be very disruptive, as otherwise I'm very healthy, have a lot going on etc..... which is weird to say because that's all good..... but when I was so sick before, it was good to stop everything and get better, now it's pretty disappointing to think about going back in all that.....)... but mostly I'm just trying to stay present and deal with what comes up rather than setting up that one outcome is happier and one is more disappointing... all can be dealt with if need be....

Sunny, not sure why you're having surgery. If you have UC or Crohn's and are keeping part of your colon, then you need much more regular scopes than the usual over 50 as you're at high risk of colon cancer still (more like once a year). If it's for some other reason, I have no idea. No worries on "interrupting," of course our threads make each other think about our own situation..... much more interesting when it's a bigger picture.

     OK...thank you.  Glad everything went well.   I am learning something new every day.  When I had my surgery in 2010, my surgeon never mentioned anything about the possibilities of something going haywire.  I thought it was a given that after surgery everything is just hunky dory.  I even asked him if I needed to follow up with my GI doctor and he said, "Not unless you have upper bowel problems, but, I don't foresee that happening."

     Well, now I come to find out I have colitis in the anus.  However, the suppositories have helped tremendously!!!  I am even giving it a second thought whether to go for the biopsies on the 6th of Nov.  I suppose it's a good thing to do though .  I just am afraid of them tearing the staples out or some horrid episode while I am "under sedation".  I believe this surgeon (since my original surgeon is retired) told me they use Propofol...isn't that what killed Michael Jackson?  Oh well, maybe I am just overreacting.

Yay, I am so happy to hear that there was no Crohn's or inflammation and definitely no cancer :) Helps strengthen my hope that Crohn's Colitis does have a lower recurrence rate with the surgery that we had.

Sorry, you are still facing another surgery, but I know you will bounce back quickly and hopefully kick those blockages for good !!!
