Hello everyone,

Rectal cancer changed my life. I awoke from surgery with an ileo stoma. Do I love my stoma, of course not. Do I love the daily care & maintenance of being an ostomate...certainly not... I would rather be "normal"; but that is no longer my reality. But...I am grateful that surgery was able to remove the cancer and I love that fact that I am alive and cancer free.

After my surgery in Aug 2013 I discovered this site and have been coming here ever since. I want to say that collectively YOU ALL provide a wonderful service when you share your individual stories and experiences (both good and bad) in living life with a stoma or jpouch or whatever your situation is. I may or may not agree with every comment. And I certainly have not walked in everyones' shoes. But I do respect the fact that a person took the time to share their thoughts and I assume they do so with the best of intentions.

To everyone who contributes to this forum...may I say "THANK YOU".

A very interesting thread. Having had an ileo for nearly 23 years and never once regretted it despite the strictures, abscesses and multiple surgeries but do I love my stoma. Well, yes in that it has allowed me to live my life. Would I prefer to have a fully functioning colon.....umm yes again but then I would also like to be 5'4, blond and a size 8 (UK size) and have a huge trust fund and fly everywhere first class. But like having a normal colon, that isn't going to happen either.
