blurry vision after surgery?

I had a total colectomy last Tuesday. Since the day of surgery, I have had difficulties with my vision - sometimes both eyes, but mostly one eye. Everything is blurry, whether it's the tv, or my laptop or cell phone right in front of my face. It's hard to focus on anything.

I thought maybe it was related to medication but I stopped taking narcotics the day I left the hospital (Monday)...so I can't think of what else it could be. Unless maybe it is related to being under anesthesia for so long during surgery?

Has anyone else ever had this experience after surgery?

I had the same issue in the hospital and believe it was the pain medicine. after leaving the hospital my vision was fine.

Ask your doc. A lot of those pain meds are hard on the whole body so is anesthesia. Was your op done open with LONG scar or lap? Rosemary

Yes, I had the same thing happen. One nurse finally suggested it might be from a little anti-nausea sticker patch they put behind my ear. Once they took that off, my vision went back to normal in a several days. Did you by chance have one of those?

Rosemary - I had mine done lap, so I was under for a while

Blueheron - I had the biggest "DUH!" moment when I read your post! Just last night I found one of those anti-nausea patches behind my ear that I had totally forgotten about. I hope that was the culprit! I was out of it but I do remember a nurse saying the side effects of those patches was dry mouth, blurry vision, etc. I had one on the entire time I was in the hospital and when I came home.

I had really blurry vision for 4 weeks post-abdominal surgery. Couldn't see to drive or read. I had to buy a cheap pair of dollar store readers to get me through the waiting. It started to really improve at about 6 weeks. I'm now 9 weeks post-surgery. My eyesight is still not exactly where it was pre-surgery but I can see again with my regular prescription. I had the anti-nausea patch too. They took it off at the hospital but the medication is meant to go below the skin. I also read about the patch itself. It said that they should thoroughly wash the area where the patch was to remove any residual medication. I was so drugged up in the hospital that I don't remember if the nurses washed it or not. So, I went ahead and took and alcohol wipe to it. Anyway, Be patient. Your eyesight will return to normal and pick up a pair of cheap readers to get yourself through it.

I had hernia surgery 4 days ago and have had terribly blurry vision since. I had general anesthesia but was only under a short time. I did not have the anti nausea patch ( wish I did) but they did give me 3 types of anti nausea meds because i was feeling so bad after surgery. Does anyone know if this vision problem clears up, had problems with reading before but distance was fine, can't stand this feeling .

I had vision stuff too - I was worried but it went away - it was really weird though.

I just had Laparoscopic Sigmoid Colectomy for Chronic Diverticular Disease. Got home yesterday from hospital. My vision is so blurry and I had an optical migraine yesterday. Even my prescription glasses don't help. I could not locate a anti-nausea patch. I was under for 3 hours. Glad to hear this is common and it will go away.

Vision Improved After Surgery!!
I'm 52. I had an eye exam about a week before having my right shoulder partially replaced. My eyes were both -1.50 (distance vision). This hasn't changed in 20 years. Today, 4 weeks after surgery I went to pick up my new glasses. My right eye was totally blurry with the glasses on. I had my eyes checked again and my right eye actually improved by 83%. My left eye stayed the same. It went from -1.50 to -.25. At my age, eyes are supposed to be getting worse as I age. I am having my left shoulder replaced in about 6 months. If that eye improves, that would be freaky. Does anyone know of anyone whose vision improved after surgery?
