Lubricating deodorant question

So I changed my bag this morning and I have been having some skin irritation sometimes worse than other times, but it has been irritated pretty much since surgery in December. I've been using the stoma powder and it helps. But today I found some lubricating deodorant I didn't know I had. I wanted to try it and see if it helped with the smell at all. So I put a packet in my bag. Then I got to thinking if it would irritate my skin more or not? Is most of that stuff that you can put in your bag safe for skin, irritation, and the stoma?

One would hope it would be safe. I use the Coloplast Brava lubricating deodorant. I put a few squirts in with each bag change and I've never had an issue. (Everyone seems to like the Hollister M9, but it's blue! Yuck!)

Hey Amanda, nothing you put in your bag should touch your skin and your skin needs to be protected from whatever comes out of you. Lots of people say to keep a little space between the stoma and the wafer. That's OK as long as that little bit of bare skin gets protected with a barrier film, Eakin seal or something else. Our skin isn't made to stand up to the stuff that comes out of us.

Yep, I'm a newbie too and have been trying the Adapt lubricating deodorant. I like it, and it's not irritating my skin. However they gave me a product in the hospital which I bought more of, it's called Enzymatic Rain, it's a spray liquid. (You can get it online) It is used for cleaning the stoma area, kills odors, spot cleaning fabrics, and it emulsifies the output. So what I've been doing the past couple days/nights is actually pouring a teaspoonful into the bag after I empty it, and sort of pushing it around in the bag to distribute it. That way if I have thick output (a problem I've been discussing ad nauseam on a different thread!) it emulsifies (turns liquidy) and cuts down my chances of having a blowout. And that stuff is meant to clean the stoma area so it definitely won't hurt your skin.

The products you purchase have been tested before hitting the market, so they are generally recognized as safe, but that's not saying that you can't have a possible reaction to them - it's common with adhesives, and some people need to try different products in order to find one that doesn't cause skin irritation.

If your skin is being irritated around your stoma, then it could be a sign of your wafer not holding up 100% - try using moldable rings or change your appliance more often to see if it helps. Looks like you are a new ostomate, so irritation is almost expected for the first little while tongue

VeganOstomy- I am a new ostomate! I've actually watched a few of your YouTube videos for information, very helpful!

Swordswoman- I hadn't heard of that spray stuff! I have problems with thick output pancaking around the stoma.
My ostomy is temporary however, I get it reversed in a couple weeks, so unfortunately I wouldn't have a lot of time to try it out. Definitely helpful information though!
