I can only tell you that I love my permanent ileostomy. Just because problems are possible does not mean you will get all of them. My stoma doesn't stop me doing anything, I don't worry about
leaks - I've had a few, but it really only has been a few and those were preventable, and I've had my stoma since 2013. I had to stick to a specific diet for a while, but I don't even have to do that anymore. My skin is perfect.
I have had a lot of digestive problems since getting a stoma, but they've all been about
my other health condiditions, not the stoma itself, and in all honesty, I don't think I could have got through them without a stoma. Diarrhoea is
so much easier to manage with an ileostomy, especially when I was on bedrest in hospital! Much easier to have to empty your stoma bag than have a normal bowel movement!
This is my experience, I can't say if yours will be the same or whether you will mind having a stoma, but having had one I find it hard to see why some people believe life with a stoma will be unbearable. I have a
lot of medical issues that make my life miserable, but my stoma is not one of them. I don't consider it a negative at all.
That said, I do realise this is a very personal decision, and the right choice for you may not be the same as mine. If there are other options available, e.g. beginning with just the removal of your colon but with no stoma at first, that may be a better fit for you psychologically.
But I really hope you don't decide cancer is preferable to losing your colon. I'm so sorry you're feeling that way. I think if you can just get through the surgery, then you can deal with problems as they come and concentrate on making life with no colon as good as it can be for you, you may find it's ok. I know it feels like you have no good options, but some really are not as bad as they may seem to you right now.
