Anyone had jpouch removed?

If so, how awful was the surgery?

How would this effect someone that had had a three step procedure, with many adhesions in between each procedure?

NSSG, between steps two and three, total proctocolectomy and ileal pouch formation, they had to spend 3/12 hours doing adhesion lysis, before the procedure proper.

I did have a lot of adhesions. They didnt know that before the surgery began, there were two surgeons involved. They spent a lot of time cutting the pouch loose and one of the surgeons wanted to give up on the laporascopy and open me up but the other, the lead, persisted and got it done. I would guess if they know one has a lot of adhesions they will do open surgery. Less time under the knife but probably a bit longer to recover.

The key to the end ileo is to have a good stoma which to me means one that the opening is at least 3/4 inch out of the body. When I had a disconnected J and an end ileo the stoma opening was close to flush due to tension from the J pouch. It was difficult to manage. They redid that when the pouch was removed and I now have a very easy to manage stoma.

I was back working within 3 or 4 weeks. Not much pain. I walked a lot pushing more each day, I did this after all my surgeries.

Feeling "normal" a hard question, someone told me that it takes a month per hour of surgery under full anesthesia, that as a rule of thumb may be close. Every surgery takes something out of you, but you may well feel much much better than before surgery. I dont think one ever comes all the way back to "normal". Ive had total of 5 and I dont feel like I did before I started, but I do feel prety good and I am healthy and look healthy and very active, no restrictions self-imposed or otherwise.

Remember I did not have the butt wound to contend with, as my anus is intact The healing and pain from that varies greatly from person to person.

The order from top to bottom after a ileal J pouch is created is: small intestine, J pouch, rectal cuff, anus. The entire large intestine above the rectum and the rectum save a tiny bit is removed during pouch creation surgery. My cuff had been stripped in the orginal surgery it seems they just sealed the stripped cuff leaving everything from that point down (maybe two inches to the outside). There is tiny amount of mucus which has decreased since surgery. A daily shower takes care of it. After all my other surgery I did not want a long recovery or difficult recovery from anus removal and being sewn up. So far I have been very happy with that decision.
