Hi everyone,

I was recently informed that I may have to have a Colostomy. I am nervous, especially about all the potential life style effects.

Can I ask those of you with ostomies; what were the biggest problems you had after surgery? How did you go about solving these problems?

Any tips or advice would be welcome.

I think it's all relative. How miserable are you now? I personally hit rock bottom 3 times before agreeing to surgery. The surgical process and recovery were horrific. Many days I begged for my UC back.

But then time passed. I felt better and started getting used to my ostomy. In comparison to the misery of my UC, my ostomy is only a moderate inconvenience. After some time, trials, and a bunch of errors, I'm happy with my decision. I overcame most of my obstacles by keeping a close relationship with my ostomy nurse and researching new options to minimize discomforts.

I have an ileostomy due to Crohn's Disease, and I can honestly say that I've been doing more NOW than I had before getting sick. I don't feel limited at all.

My biggest problem, and it's only because I'm in Canada, is the added cost of supplies/insurance premiums.
