I'm usually on the UC pages but have recently been diagnosed with low-grade dysplasia. I like to plan ahead so I'm wondering who are the best University of Chicago surgeons? Which ones has anyone had experience with, especially recently.

I had my surgery done at the University of Chicago just this past June. Dr. Neil Hyman did my surgery. I've been going to this hospital for a very long time. They did my liver transplant. And now this. He did an amazing job. He is a great doctor. Very compassionate, takes the time to answer any questions and explains everything. He tells it to you straight. He even personally called me a few times after the surgery to see how I was doing. I needed some pain meds and he had them FedEx'd overnight to my house!

I've seen quite a few UofC IBD doctors since 2011 and they all have been amazing - even the fellows and residents. I'm kind of a regular there because I've been so sick. Everyone remembers me and knows me when I go - receptionists, nurses, ER and hospital nurses (on 9West), food delivery, etc. It's like Cheers for me!

My doctor Rubin and surgeon Cannon are so patient with me. I've been such a scary nutcase through this process and I'm horrible at making decisions. I have personal emails for them and they respond on weekends, off days, while on vacation, etc.

My original doctor Hanauer left for Northwestern and I met with an awesome experienced surgeon from Cleveland Clinic, Scott when I was admitted at Northeestern for a week with UC seeking a second opinion. I loved both of them, however the other medical staff, i.e., nurses, attendings, residents, housekeeping, etc. could not compare to the UofC IBD staff. So I got discharged and returned to UofC to have my surgery.

Thanks, everybody. I met with Dr. Hurst yesterday. He seemed fine but I can't say I felt a good connection with him. But that my have been because he didn't think I needed surgery so he didn't spend a lot of time with me.

He told me to see Dr. Rubin and have another chromoendoscopy. So that's next on the agenda.

I've been happy with how organized everything is at U of C. The support staff were very helpful when setting up appointments and getting medical records transferred. Also, Dr. Hurst promised to get me in to see Dr. Rubin much sooner than the first available appointment (March 2016!) and they indeed called me today for an appointment in two weeks. Considering how well-known Dr. Rubin is, I'm impressed.

I never had help like this when dealing with Northwestern docs. My internist would have to get on the phone and beg for a specialist to squeeze me in and even then, it would be a month instead of three months.

You will love Rubin. He is so gentle and patient. It took me a while to get to surgery and I don't regret the time I spent trying various drug options and clinical trials. The time spent trying almost anything helped me feel more confident when Rubin finally decided that surgery was the only option.

Thanks, SLF. Dr. Rubin was my doctor about eight years ago and I liked him very much. But I moved north so he became more geographically inconvenient and my UC was mild, I didn't need a rockstar doctor. But now it's time for a rockstar and I'm grateful that I live in Chicago where can see one.

U of C is our place of preference as well. Let me count the hours....
So, Dr. Rubin is my hero. There for all of the ugly times and cares a ton. We have been at U of C since pediatric days, and had three surgeries in the new hospital. The Center for Care and Discovery alone is reason to visit!
Surgeon was Dr. Hurst. I think he has the right temperament for a surgeon. Confident, though not chatty, experienced and still up to date on techniques. My daughter's 3 step went off without a hitch-his skill at sewing just the minimum of rectal cuff and advanced skill at robotics made for a success story. His team are also pro's- Michele Rubin( no relation), and the Stoma nurses are terrific. So, if you decided to go there, you are in good hands. A good friend just had lung surgery there, so I got to revisit and she was also pleased with the whole affair-they seem to be running a good operation-no pun intended.
