Just a real quick post for htose suffering from odor issues
Three things have greatly improved my situation-
1: Use a squirt (about a teaspoon worth) of hydrogen peroxide in pouch IF there's bad odor- fill with water- swish around, empty- use just water this time to rinse remaining Hydrogen peroxide from pouch- this seems ot kill Oder well
(I've tried N'ascent as well ,and it works fine too, but is expensive- I've also used diluted bleech in pouch- keep away from stoma- and it too kills odor pretty well- but I wouldn't suggest bleech)
2: Probably the best help for me is to take a small swig of Peptol Bismol twice a day- once in morning and another before bed
3: Activated Charcoal tablets (Use these only when eating foosds you know will cause bad odors like fish, beans etc)
But do use peptol after doing your own research- there was some concern it can cause 'megacolon' in people with their colons still intact - although I find very little info on this- so it'll be a judgement call for you to decide for yourself if yopu wish to use it- There is a product that basically is the same stuff just for odor- can't remember name, but it's expensive- peptol, generic brand is much less expensive
The bi****h bonds with, and neutralizes sulfur molecules and other molecules which are responsible for odors- Since I began using- the difference is night and day
If you are worried about possible side effects- you could take just periodically- like when you go out to eat spicy food, or eat things like broccoli, or other odor causing foods, and don't take any when you know your meals are going to be more bland and tame, such as say ham, or meats, and mild veggies etc. Occasional peptol likely isn't going to hurt anyone that can tolerate it well
I found htough it doesn't work as well for fish- but what can help in addition to peptol is taking charcoal tablets too- sometimes I need to take 5-6 to tame the odor- but without the two products, it would be quite awful
Now, do keep in mind that peptol and charcoal will interfere with meds absorption- so be sure to only take them an hour or more after you take your meds (even longer if you take time released meds)
I don't take meds except for Prilosec and loperamide, and I just take them at same time as petal- but hten again I don't much care if it affects the meds or not- it doesn't seem to-
anyways- these are just some thjigns I've discovered over the years for odor
You can also try the tic tac in pouch- use spearamint or wintergreen or peppermint- strong odors- but I find they just mask, not neutralize like the peptol and charcoal do
