I really have no choice except to have an ileostomy. I have had CES and has damaged all of my nerves in the saddle area. I had the Inter-stem recently and it did not help at all because I felt nothing. I keep having UTI's, 7 since spring of 2015. Bowels either move for days on end or will not move for 20 days or so. I am just scared, not knowing what to expect I guess.

First thing, you will have to adapt to a new lifestyle with the ostomy. And, depending whether or not you have plans on taking down the ostomy, there will be no change. At first, you will have to empty your bag quite often, being that you have only part of a colon/no colon at all. Anyways, good luck :)

Hi Jan.

Sorry things are not going well. I would love to write more but have to leave in a couple minutes. I will get back to you soon though. For now, know there is hope and that living with an ostomy can be so much better than suffering the way you are now. I know. Been there, done that. Will talk soon!!!


Hang in there, help is just around the corner. Don't give up hope for a better life. It will happen!

How are things going? Have you had your surgery yet? I had a temp loop ielostomy for 10 weeks. I found this site to be very helpful!

hi, this is my first time doing something like this . I had rectal cancer and thank God I am now cancer free but the suffering after my ileostomy reversal is quite unbearable. I cannot hold my BM if someone knows or can suggest what I can do regarding my diet it would help me tremendously. I work as a bus driver and sometimes I have to sit in my stool for one hour before I can clean myself, please help! Whenever it's time to go I go!

You may have either :1. Damage to the nerves that control the anal sphincter; or 2: LAR syndrome (lower anterior resection syndrome).

Rectal cancer surgery can have unwanted secondary effects as the pelvis is very small (about the size of a small tea cup).

You may want to visit the Colon Club. It is a support forum for individuals and care givers of those with colorectal cancer. You can Google "Colon Club."

I have a close friend with rectal cancer and she finds the forum a valuable source of information on the latest treatment options and a valuable source of support/friendship.
