Low Platelets before surgery

Has anyone here ever had low platelets before surgery? Did they still allow you to go ahead with surgery or did they delay it until your platelet levels returned to normal? Maybe they gave you a blood transfusion before? I just had my blood work done on tuesday and my platelets were 55. Normal range is 150-400. They had me get more blood work done on thursday and my levels dropped even further to 42. Is this something they will delay my surgery for or is it something standard where they would just give me a transfusion before hand? My surgery is on Jan 22nd and a little nervous that they will call me next week to push it back.

***All other blood work came back normal***

For my first surgery my blood count came back low, don't know now what it was at the time. They canceled my surgery and did an iron infusion and also a epo shot ( erythropoietin). Was several weeks later that I had surgery. So I'm thinking you have to be in some safe number before they will go ahead. Don't know where they draw the line but I'm sure if you call your Drs office someone will know.

i was around hemoglobin 4, and with that you can imagine my platelets are low as well. I lived through my surgery... and now im fine.. Good luck m8

I'm sure I'll live but just don't want any delays. I know it's not good to have low platelets, that's for sure.

The short answer is that it depends on what's causing your low platelet count. You can get by with a fairly low platelet count without significantly increased risk but 42 and dropping is probably a level that warrants further workup whether you were going for surgery or not. Have you talked to your doctor about the results yet?

No I haven't had a chance to talk to my doctor yet. The surgeon ordered more blood work and all tests came back okay. Such as INR, Activated PTT, Fibrinogen. Not really sure why it's so low. I'm not having any abnormal bleeding or bruising either.
