This is just part of the same thing I had posted in my thread about leaks, and I'd still love leak feedback there, but wanted to post the part about using Benzoin Tincture in a separate thread:

I finally ordered some BCT, and tried it for the 1st time a few nights ago. I'll give it a couple tries before I decide for sure, but so far I don't love it. The smell is awful and not going away, it burns and seems to have caused skin irritation along the bottom edge of my wafer. It doesn't help that last night the night I changed my setup, there must have been a small part of the bag/wafer that wasn't totally sealed, so enough liquid leaked out to saturate the tape border on my wafer. I didn't want to change the whole set up less than 12 hours after putting it on, so I just cleaned it up well and will maybe change earlier than normal....ugh. The fun never ends.

It's been about 4 days since I wrote that, and still feel pretty much the same way. The wafer is holding just fine, I still get a whiff of that BCT smell from time to time and still have a little irritation and itchiness that I don't normally have. We'll see how it all looks when I do my next change.

I've been using Friar's Benzoin Tincture ever since I learned about it from Polisdan a few years ago. For me, the trick is to make sure that the skin surrounding my stoma is perfectly dry before applying the tincture. I make sure that no mucus drips from my stoma onto my skin which would moisten the area. I apply two layers of the tincture, blow drying between applications. I then apply an eakin seal that I've heated as well.

The only time it stings my skin is when the area is raw to start out with and then the sting only lasts for a few minutes. The tincture is antisecptic.

BCT has never failed me since I started using it about seven years ago.

I wasn't saying that it has failed...haven't used it long enough to make that call. So far it seems to be holding the wafer on very well...I'm more concerned with the fact that it seems like it might be irritating my skin a bit. That and the smell....it is awful and doesn't go away! Am I the only one who's noticed??

Maybe we have different things then, because mine has a pretty strong smell. This is what I used.

Dan, you must be losing your sense of smell. Friar's has a strong odour, anything with a high alcohol content will smell!!

Yes that's the right BCT.
As for sense of smell, I lost my sense of smell 35 years ago. It is often the very first symptom of Parkinson's disease, which I have had for 9 years. With good medication you cannot tell that I have it.

    It helped me.  I had a small ulceration (looked like an ulcer) on the skin a bit away from the stoma.  The tincture cleared it up within a week.  I still have redness around the stoma even though I use the tincture and Eakin seal.  There is no soreness though and no skin eruptions.

Did you try the tincture without the Eakin seal?

Yes and it was still red. I just use the seal now, no need for the tincture anymore. I have it in case I develop any ulcerations like I had before.
