Flat stoma due to peristomal hernia causing leakage.

Hello Ostomates: I have just joined this group. My ostomy is almost 25 years old due to colorectal cancer. I have been very fortunate. Early on, I found a pouch that fit properly and never had any problems til a few years ago when I developed a peristomal hernia. It is large and protruding, and I cannot get the pouch to fit properly, leading to big time leakage - mostly at night while I am sleeping!
So, any help with the leakage problem would be greatly appreciated and has anyone had surgery for a peristomal hernia? I think the surgery is inevitable, but oh, how I would like to avoid going to the hospital! Thank you for any help. Msroo

Thanks for your reply. I saw a colorectal surgeon yesterday, and he wants to remove the entire colon because I have UColitis! I got several samples of convex pouches, but they still leaked. I am trying a "collar", molded out of a barrier strip which fits next to the stoma, then I put the karaya pouch over it. The barrier strip material sticks better than the karaya. I just "made" this. Here's hoping it works.
