pain when stool comes out

Could your wafer be too tight around the stoma? My stoma went up two sizes (1/8" each time) roughly a year after my colostomy. I don't remember having severe pain, though, more just discomfort, the occasional stinging feeling. At that time, my stoma also began swelling up, really looks like it is struggling to push out the stuff. It still swells, even though my current size of wafer leaves a good 1/8-1/4 inch around the stoma, and I get the occasional sting, but quite bearable. I have been taking restoralax to soften up my usually very thick output, but it doesn't seem to help with the straining, though it does reduce pancaking.

Hope someone comes up with a better answer for you. Have you talked to your doctor or stoma nurse?

I don't really have a good suggestion as to why you are feeling those pains, so probably won't be much help. But, I can at least assure you that you aren't the only person who deals with similar issues. There are times where I get some pain with my output....kind of behind my stoma...like maybe it's taking a little more effort for everything to work its way out of there. I do worry that it might mean I have a bit of a twist that comes close to getting too tight for output to pass through, or maybe I've had some almost blockages. I always forget to ask my surgeon when I talk to her. Hope you are feeling well!
