Question for those that use the benzoin compound tincture

Does it make your bag harder to remove or make the adhesive stick more?

I'm having some skin irritation from my wafer, no matter what kind i use. No leaks, this is not around my stoma it is from the adhesive. My skin has been weird since surgery and everything sticks to me like super glue. My wafers have been really hard to get off this time around and causing skin irritation. Its weird even the sterry strips they put on my incisions after the staples were removed are glued to me, my Dr couldn't believe they hadn't fallen off yet.

Anyways someone in medical supply suggested I try this instead of a barrier wipe or spray. But I thought this made things stick even more, I think its what the nurses used on the edge of my picc line bandages for better wear. I just don't want to make my wafer stick even more. But I do want to try this to see if it protects my skin from the adhesive.

Since you say that you don't have leaks, then why would you want to remove the wafer? The benzoin compound tincture is antiseptic as well as providing a good seal.

I change my wafer about every 7 days. If I change more frequently my skin becomes irritated. The compound heals my skin and during the ensuing days the seal breaks down.

I change mine every third day. Of course I've had my ostomy for over five years, so, maybe, my skin isn't as sensitive around the stoma as yours.

Well today is day 5 and when I normally change my wafer. It feels fine so not changing today. I'm going to wait until day 6 or 7 and see if that makes removal better. Either way I'm going to order the tincture from edgepark with my next order. If I decide I don't need it I figure it's good to have on hand in case I do develop a leak or irritation and won't have to wait to order.

I love the tincture. I ordered it off Amazon as my insurance wasn't going to cover it and it was at a better price.

To answer your question, it does not make it harder to remove. I battled several episodes of skin irritation, some quite severe and read on this forum to use it. I have not looked back.

I do use adhesive remover, then just soap and water to clean real good, dry and apply the tincture.

I am doing great! Thanks for asking NSSG! I'm finally getting energy back and have had a few outings. It is so great to go shopping and not worry about when I last ate or where all the bathrooms are!

I went 7 days this week and still no leaks or irritation around the stoma. Going that long did seem to help as the wafer seemed like it was breaking down a little. The barier wipe I used last week did seem to make removing easier it didn't hurt this time and came off easier but didn't seem to do much for my skin. It was still really irritated on the outer edge of the wafer.

I got my new supplies order with the benzoin so decided to try that this week. Hopefully it works as well for me as others. It did stop the itching as soon as I put ot on and it dried.
