Compound Benzoine Tincture Questions

OK all you Compound Benzoine Tincture users- I've been using nothing but Hollister medial adhesive for yearsm and never had any issues with pouches leaking- but now all of a sudden the pouches do not want to stick well anymore-

I tried Eakins seals, but found them very messy (It would melt towards stoma and stick to pouch, causing me to have to yank the plastic apart to empty properly, made emptying difficult etc- just too messy for me) AND I had leaks under the Eakins as well- so why bother? (I tried both using no adhesive and medical adhesive on skin, an Eakins, and between Eakins and pouch seal- nothing helped- still leaked between eakin seal and skin)

Anyways- I'd like to ask- when you apply the Compound Benzoine Tincture, do you do so to the skin AND the pouch seal? Can it be applied just to the pouch seal? Or does it need it on both surfaces?

The reason I ask is because my stoma is weird- it changes sizes, and after applying the Hollister medical adhesive, it dries on skin and isn't tacky, and I'm able to wipe around stoma right before I apply pouch to make sure skin is absolutely dry- also I have to pinch stoma to make it shrink in order to get pouch on- .

What I'm afraid of with the Compound Benzoine Tincture is applying it to skin, having it dry really tacky, and not being able to wipe around stoma without the toilet paper sticking to it (meaning it would ruin the seal because I wouldn't be able to get the TP off it in time). My stoma 'weeps' and causes the skin around stoma to become wet- which is why I have to wipe the skin right before I place pouch on

I only have like 10-12 second when I wipe around stoma when I pinch stoma to shrink it, before it begins swelling up again and becomes too large to slip pouch over- With the Hollister medical adhesive, I can quickly wipe around stoma without worrying about TP sticking to it

Also, does this stuff have a bad odor? I tried some Mastisol once, (Kinda similar to Compound Benzoine Tincture I think) http://www.amazon.com/Mastisol-Medical-Liquid-Adhesive-Bottle/dp/B006OU8PNY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1451946672&sr=8-1&keywords=mastisol and not only didn't it hold well, but it stunk to high heaven- strong medical odor that lasted through a couple of hours- I was glad to get the pouch off the next day and back to Hollister medial adhesive-

It was a real tacky mess to work with- and I had the issue of trying to wipe the stoma wetness off my skin before applying the pouch

Thanks Dan- My problem though is that I have to be rough by pinching and pushing down on it kinda roughly to get it to shrink enough so the pouch can slip down over it- This means the stoma gets smushed so that it contacts the skin around the stoma- it stays shrunk for around 10-15 seconds or so before swelling again- (I probably need a revision surgery for the prolapse- but doc is reluctant because he thinks it's 'not that prolapsed' despite the fact that it changes size enough that it pushes the seal off the skin right around the stoma)

so- you don't put any on the pouch seal itself then? I'd think the two sides would need to be sticky (pouch seal and skin) in order for good seal? No? (with my Hollister medical adhesive, I have to apply to both in order to get a good seal- but I think they've either changed the formula or something has happened to my skin because the adhesive isn't holding as well as it used to- which is why I'm desperately trying to find an alternative adhesive)

Do you have ileostomy or colostomy? My output is almost water consistency-- most of the time- so I can only wear a pouch one day (24 hours- any more and I'm really taking a chance on it leaking) Do you think the BCT will hold well enough with liquid output to help pouch last 2 days or so? (I know you can't know for sure- just would like to know how well BCT generally on average protects the seal from lifting)

I just wish there was a glue or adhesive that could be applied that is so strong it would take alcohol to break the seal-

I went for 30 years not having problems with karaya pouches- then Hollister really ruined them with cheap construction (Karaya not glued well to pouch)- could wear them 3 days- with very physical work, sweating etc- no issues ever- no leaks except a few times but was my fault) Had to switch to newer seals- they worked for awhile ok- but could only get 1 day

Now with my ostomy changing sizes, having hard time keeping on 24 hours, and forget about doing anything- even walking any distance now- as it accelerates the seal lifting off skin around stoma-

Not something I wanted to deal with after so many years of no issues- Uggg!

I have an ileostomy. If the area is hairy you need to shave it off. Apply BCT and dry with hair dryer about 5 seconds. The wafer will stick immediately. Try my method. Water,paper towels and BCT.

unfortunately it doesn't seem to hold well for me if I only use the tincture with no adhesive combined- (although I am still using it Under my Hollister medical adhesive layer that I spray on over the top of it because the tincture does heal the skin nicely)

I like that it dries very quickly, and that I can apply a second coat if need be right away almost- cuts down on the waiting time whiel changing- I would recommend it for healing the skin, but as an adhesive it doesn't seem to work well for my skin unfortunately

No, no soap only water- I clean very well around stoma, and wipe with wet toilet paper- trhen dry thoroughly- My skin aroudn stoma is usually very good to mildly irritated an a little red- but no weeping of skin or anything- I don't use adhesive removers- (I've tried them foudn no difference in how pouches stuck)

The BCT doesn't hold the seal to the skin- gthere is always a 1/2 inch aroudn the stoma that lifts regardless of what i use- tried all kinds of glues, adhesives, pastes eakins seals, and now the BCT (Which I'm still using because the skin gets irritated right around the stoma- and the BCT helps seal it and heal it better than the hollister medical adhesive alone-

My output is like water- all the time- and the output being that thin it works it's way under the seal especially at night- I've been fortunate that I've never had many leaks during hte night, but some mornings it's very very close to leaking- having worked it's way all the way to edge almost-

I just wish htere was soem kind of super glue that was waterproof, and poo proof that had a rock solid bond to hte skin- I would just love to be able to wear pouches more than a day securely- Even when i take metamucil which thickens the output up prettyy solid- the seal still doesn't stick well to skin-

The only seal that ever stuck well and created a great bond was karaya- it woudl melt to hte skin an hold liek crazy- but hollister went and changed the way they make them and now they are quite badly made and fall apart between the karaya and pouch- I used to get 3 days out of them and I worked very physical jobs too-

Now I've been forced to use the hydrocolloid seal pouches because of hte bad construction of hte karaya ones- and the hydrocolloid pouches do not stick to my skin well at all-
