Stoma powder+Eakins seal usually does the trick. How long has he had his stoma, as the stoma changes in size the first few months and the appliance to stoma fit has to be adjusted to compensate. When changing bags also are we making sure the area is clean? Perhaps he could take a shower or bath without the bag on if he's comfortable to ensure the area is nice and clean then add stoma powder, cut out the eakins seal and the appliance to the correct size. Anyways that was my routine, it's all about
routine and I'm sure he'll find what works for him. Red and a rash is not the norm and wont be once he figures things out!
