I'm so glad. Even though it was a tough 2 years post diagnosis, and a difficult decision to choose the end ileostomy, and then a difficult 18 day stay in the hospital after surgery...... I feel really positive about how things are going to proceed from here. Thanks for the support and guidance, everyone. You kept me level-headed and able to support him on his journey to health when I was about to crack!!

Hi JayBee1,

I just read your son's story and I'm sorry he had such a difficult time. I am glad that he has started to get better.

This is a major life changing operation and it is hard to remain positive when you experience setbacks. Like your son, my husband had ulcerative colitis for years and had a total colectomy 4 weeks ago. He had a few hiccups along the way, in particular a blockage that resulted in a return to hospital. I was hysterical and thought he was going to die. He is now doing a lot better thank goodness.

This site has really helped me as it's good to hear about other people's recovery and the obstacles they have overcome.

JayBee, I am so happy he is starting to do the things he loves again. It's a big procedure and it takes time. It also takes a lot of time to find products you like, and it's kind of fun trying different things. Life with an ostomy can be very good, and the contrast between the limited life you live with UC and the liberation you get from the ostomy is night and day. It's lovely.

Clarabella, The people who chimed in to respond to my original post helped me to keep his difficult recovery in perspective. Left to my own thoughts, I imagined the worst outcome like you mentioned. Having lurked on these boards for the two years post diagnosis, I just hoped they'd realize my fatigued mental and emotional state 2 weeks post op and help me get my thoughts back on track so that I could be helpful to my son. Not only did they offer support, but the relatable experiences also really calmed me down. I'm very grateful to everyone who reached out to me!!!! Thank you all!
