stoma retraction/regression?

I have heard of people stomas retracting almost to skin level. Mine does move and shrink a little when I change. I joke it gets cold? My stoma is over an inch and usually makes a little spout but when I am cleaning and have it out it sometimes does shrink a little and is no longer a spout sits all compact on my my belly.

Has your weight changed at all?

When I first got my ostomy, the stoma was tiny, almost an 'innie' and I had to switch to a convex wafer to get it to stay on. As the swelling from surgery healed, about 3-5 months, it became a 'outtie' and sticks out up to 2inches. When I change my system I lay on my back and I've noticed that when I wipe the stoma gently with a wet paper towel (viva towels are soft and really good for this) it retracts up to an inch. Or not, it does seem to have a mind of it's own. I can recommend getting the support of a wound care center to help you find the best way to work with your stoma.

Usually wound care is in the hospital (around hyperbaric treatments) and I go there when I have issues with my stoma and the surrounding skin. My surgeon is affiliated with that hospital so I don't have a problem getting an appointment and my insurance covers it. They helped me in various ways - I didn't know to use a convex wafer and they've given me special glues, etc, when I had skin issues around my stoma. Try googling 'wound care center' - I think most hospitals have them, because if a patient has ostomy surgery, it is the wound care nurses that handle putting the systems on and changing them.
They may recommend you talk to a surgeon, but they can only recommend and give you the benefit of their wisdom. Having the ostomy redone is a big decision and I would try to see what alternatives there are first. Good luck and hope this helps!
