Follow up after permanent ileostomy surgery from temporary ileostomy

Hi, Well May 10th I had my temporary ileostomy changed to a permanent one. Healed well and the best decision I have ever made. Completely new person. I asked to change it from temporary to permanent as I was getting stool still going thru with the temporary and then get stuck in rectum. So once the cut the large intestine to the small intestine I've had no painful backed up.

Just thought i would update.

Glad to hear you are doing well. I never had the option of having a j-pouch. Actually, I didn't care because I was so sick of being sick. I had ulcerative proctitis for twelve years and the meds were killing me, they really were. My GI doctor refused to send me to a surgeon, so I found one online, read his credentials and went with it. I have no regrets either. Best of luck to you.

Thanks for the update. It does seem like most people on this site who chose to go with a permanent ileostomy are pretty happy with their decision. Glad it worked out so well for you.

Serenitee - good to hear about your recovery. Everyone has to make their own decisions regarding permanent illeo, j-pouch, or BCIR. And, each of us are the only ones who truly know what our bodies feel like and whether or not we can do one surgery or the other.

Thank you for sharing your update. Do you mind if I ask a few questions? How long did you have the temp ileo? Was it for crohns, uc, or something else? It sounds like you didn't have the colon and rectum removed, do you think you will do that in the future?

I'm having the same rectal issues with my temporary ileo and it's so painful that I'm trying to think of my options so I can talk to my surgeon. I'm glad it's going well for you and it sounds like you made the right decision!
