Stealth Belt tips??

Hey guys,

Total colectomy 9/8 for my severe UC and had minimal complications (ileus was the worst) but now I'm doing much better and fixing to start my PTA program back up Monday. Is three weeks post op too early to be wearing a belt. Minimal soreness around the stoma and lower back is all that's left besides the incision under my belly button (laparoscopic).

I am also worried about my bag being horizontal (purchased the Stealth Belt Pro). I hope some of you have worn a belt and can give me some guidance regarding the belt and things that go along with it (emptying your bag). Any information would be so appreciated guys! Thanks!

I had surgery at the end of June but have not yet worn a belt or any other support. The advice from my ostomy nurse was to wait 3 months before wearing a belt. It was the same advice in terms of when to increase activity to a pre-surgery stage. More recently I asked my surgeon about wearing a support belt - he didn't think it was necessary at all but suggested it should happen after three months, if it was to happen at all.

I'd suggest contacting your surgeon and ostomy nurse (if you have one) and be guided by their advice. My guess is they will lean towards 3 weeks post-op being too soon for a belt.

The stealth belt isn't really a hernia belt, I don't see how wearing one could hurt anything. You can wear it as tight or loose as is comfortable. I started wearing mine the first couple of weeks out. I also always wear my pouch horizontally. I know a lot of people would never do that, but it works out better for me wearing jeans etc. You might want to also try the b band pregnancy things from Target, I actually like them just a good as the stealth belt. Although you do get some funny looks as a guy buying them..
