I've had my colostomy for 15 months now.

Anyway, now that my ostomy is finally more active (going daily, although very firm little pieces of stool), I'm finding that I can smell poop more than ever. I don't know if it's the filters on the bags or what. I use disposable pouches, changing them 1-2 times a day. Not even sure what to use either.

I'm not just looking for a solution to the smell here. Of course, I am worried that others will smell it. I know friends and family won't tell me I smell,

…..I'm not even sure why I'm writing this anymore. Hoping I get responses that are supportive, not just telling me to stop feeling sorry for myself, etc.

If something smells, I would think the wafer or pouch isn't attached properly. It should be a closed system. My wafer was on TIGHT and the pouches locked on there, no air got in or out. Maybe you should try a different setup? What have you tried and what are you using? Have you tried pouches without a filter? How about a one piece instead of two, or vice versa?

Use Hollister M-9 deodorize drops. Zero smell.

I have read many of your posts and never once did I feel your were feeling sorry for yourself!

I am a new member myself....this is where we are suppose to ask, vent, and seek knowledge from others who have gone through what we have.

I agree with Tom, use Hollister drops.

Hey Sunny, the M-9 drops are great but I need to use more than the recommended 4-12 drops. What disturbs me is when people complain of odor but don't have any leakage. The entire system is sealed, except for the filter, and therefore the odor should be contained in the pouch. Please tell us more and we'll get this fixed.
I've had no success with filters and I use Osto-Vents to burp.

I do not have any leakage. I have been using the m-9 deodorizer which seems to help a little bit. I do believe the odor is coming out from the filter. I could go to the filterless bags, but would have to burp them fairly often.

I'm sure you'll be OK and even better if you use the KMEZVENTs. At least with them you could control when and where you burp.

I smell like crap 100% of the time and live in complete isolation. Whenever I go out I eat nothing that day, irrigate for 60-90 minutes, shower thoroughly, change the wafer/bag, and double check the seal. People always sniff and glare.

I would suggest that you try a different manufacturer brand of ostomy wafer/pouch.

Whenever I wear a Hollister product, I am able to detect a discernible smell and odor. There is no breaching of the wafer, no leak. But I do emit an unpleasant odor. Every time I try to wear a Hollister product I smell.

I use Coloplast and CyMed without issue. No smell. Never.

It may just be that your body and skin are not agreeable to the brand of ostomy system that you are using. Each company has a slightly different "recipe" to the composite of their wafer.

Try a different manufacture brand and see if you are able to be odor free.

It certainly was true for me that changing manufacturer brands made the difference between emitting an odor and being odor free.

Hi Karen,

Thanks for the suggestion. I agree that certain products might not agree with my skin, etc. Like I said before, I know there is no leak, and I have a vent in my bag, but occasionally I just can smell it. I will try some other products.

Is it always or sometimes worse? I know some things (beans, onions, garlic, etc) can make it worse. I use Safe N Simple pouch deodorant and it works pretty well. I use a two piece hollister and it seems like a good seal. I also compulsively clean the opening of mine when i empty. Probably 3-5 pieces of toilet paper and up inside the opening by an inch or two. I also use wet baby wipes around the outside plastic sometimes. Do you have an ostomy nurse? Maybe you can try some different brands or styles. Hang in there!

cover your filter with a piece of Sure Seal! I always cover mine (I have an ileo) and can shower without the filter failing...Sure Seals are waterproof and breathable so the gas can escape and water won't ruin it. They'll send samples if you email them. They aren't cheap but a sample would last you a long time if you just cover the filter.
