How quickly do you empty your bag after eating, if you go out somewhere to eat do you leave the bag full for a few hours until you get home or empty the bag at the nearest toilet as soon as it fills?

It depends. If it is less than 1/3 I don't bother if its over 1/3 I empty when I can but dont rush to do so.

This has become easier as my body adjusted. The first few months after surgery things moved faster and I emptied more frequently. Now things don't move as fast through me. I will eat breakfast and sometimes not empty again until lunchtime!

How far out are you from surgery?

I had my ileostomy on Monday haha, glad to hear things start to go slower through you as time passes. Is it worth trying loperamide before meals?(does it let you absorb the vitamins better because it stays longer in you?) And also have you tried peppermint capsules to make the output smell better?

Whoa you are a newbie! You will be amazed how much things change! By 2-3 months I was already amazed how much more my body had adapted and then by 6 months was amazed again. My ostomy now at 9 mos is so much calmer now that 6 or 8 months ago!

My surgeon said taking loperamide was good to take about a half hour before you eat if your output is too watery Or high volume. my volume stayed under 1000ml and I had good luck with thickening foods so I never took it.

I have not tried taking peppermint capsules for odor. I have pretty good luck with probiotics and fermented foods reducing my odor. I drink kefir, buttermilk, or fermented veggies and take a probiotic. Really only my output first thing smells bad, most of the rest of the day it is almost odorless.

I'm just getting back to my old routine with food, the rate the bag fills up is not an issue anymore (they gave me big portions in hospital and all at once and I normally eat small portions regularly). I can't believe how amazing I feel, so different not to be in pain all the time! No headaches, joint pain, tiredness, bloating, diahhrea blood.. Best descision I made was to get this op.

That is awesome you feel so much better. That was like me, it was so much more than just intestinal symptoms going away. Some days I still can't believe how much energy I have and that I'm never in pain. Best thing I ever did.
