Do you still see your doctor after surgery?

Hello Everyone,

So my last surgery is on Dec 12th, but then I have an appt. with my GI doctor is in may. I just wondering do you still see your doctor?

I haven't seen a doctor in regards to my ileostomy in about 39 years - not since a year after my surgery. Have not had any major problems with it that required a doctor over the years at all.

I'm still under my Surgeons care at least till the 1 year mark and I still see my GI just for routine followups. He just did an endoscopy on me due to acid reflux. He's also good friends with my Surgeon, they both know me very well and have discussed me outside of the office.

I have a jpouch and i don't get to the doctor anymore. I followed up with my surgeon a few times after surgery, but now after a year, I haven't had much reason to go back. If i had a problem, I'd likely go to my surgeon, not my GI.

I'm 11 weeks out from j-pouch surgery. I had follow ups with my surgeon at 5 and 10 weeks. I can go back and see him if there are any complications/pouchitis. Apart from that, I've been referred to a pouch clinic, where I will have a check-up every two years (mostly to check my rectal cuff is looking ok).

For the first time in four years, I don't have a single medical appointment in my diary (until the clinic at some point in 2018). That is a big shift in lifestyle, as I've been used to the constant series of blood tests, meetings with IBD nurses, infusion clinics, GI clinics, iron infusions...

My surgeon was awesome. I will be forever grateful to him.

I see my surgeon monthly. Prior to my surgery it was every 6 months.

I just see my GI annually now. But I have Crohns so even though it was Crohns colitis confined to my colon the GI wants to keep an he on my small intestines and stoma in case the Crohns come back.

A lot of UCers never see their doctor or only if there is an issue.

I asked my surgeon, after my operation in 2010, if I needed to be seen by my GI doctor anymore. He said only if I had upper gastric problems. I started with some indigestion issues @ August of last year. I called a new GI doctor because my former one was totally against my having surgery and I certainly was NOT going back to him! She placed me on Prilosec and it has been helping me. If I have anymore discomfort she suggested I have an upper GI or Endoscopy done. Keeping my fingers crossed I won't need it.
