J-pouch removal w/permanent end ileostomy

I met with physicians at Mayo Clinic and they are going to move forward with removal of my j-pouch. This will involve removing the anus and sphincter muscles as well. I know I can read articles on the internet all day long, but I have found it best to get information from those who have been through it. So, what can I expect as far as recovery? I have a completely sedentary office job and my employer is going to let me work from home. How long do you think it would be before I could return to this type of work? Any special products that I should purchase now that would make recovery more comfortable? Did anyone have high ostomy output: If so, how long did that last? Anything else I should know?

Hello clo2014,

I had a stoma during my pouch surgeries, but I have heard that for some reason this is worst (e.g. problems with high stoma output). Plus, I am having the anus and sphincter muscles removed this time. Do you use an ostomy bag holder? If so, do you have a recommendation on one that works well? I didn't use one the first time, but since this is permanent I was wanting to get a ostomy bag holder and cover. I like jogging, so hoping this surgery will get me back to where I have the energy to do do. I see you had all the problems I'm having (e.g. eye problems, painful joints etc.). Did things get better after your colostomy surgery?
