Hi tango9 if you Google hernia repair or go to the Mayo Clinic website I think you find that most hernias only get worse over time and surgery is the only real way to correct them. Any body can get a hernia but men seem to be more prone to get lower abdominal hernias than women. I just had an laporascopic inguinal hernia repair with mesh done last Thursday,( lower left abdomin) it was an out patient procedure, but sometimes they do keep you over night depending on how you do. Anyway I was really sore for the first few days but then after that no problem.! The problem with not getting it fixed is the intestines can sometimes pop though the herniated muscle and get caught or strangulation and that becomes an emergency situation that can even become life threatening if not treated immediately. Safest thing to do is talk with your doctor and surgeon to see what they say and recommend. Having an abdominal hernia repair does not make you more prone to have another One! But some people are more prone to have them than others.
Anyway I just thought I would chime in and give my two cents about It!
Good Luck to You! And I wish you Well!
P.S. any questions just contact me. I'm still pretty bruised up around my belly button and am not suppose to lift any heavier than 10 pounds for 3 weeks.
