Tip/tricks to stop flange crimping

Only had my stoma a week, no leaks so far and all is well. One thing I have noticed is the flange tends to crimp in places which makes me worry that is it going to leak. Is there anyway to stop it from doing that?

What kind of setup do you have (1-piece or 2-piece) convex or flat wafer? Who is the manufacture?

I'm using the 1-piece dansac, flat bags

I've never used Dansac. I think most people on here use Coloplast or Hollister products.

How's the recovery going?

I am one week into life with my stoma and currently using the 2 piece Coloplast system. I haven't had any flange issues. Post surgery I was on the 2 piece Hollister system with no issues as well. I think I would be concerned if either system had flange crimping issues. There are lots of choices out there...I am experimenting currently and so far both Hollister and Coloplast are great.

Hi Ben,

Good to hear you're recovering well. The same thing happened to me too (using coloplast 1 piece), and like you I worried about it. What I found was that the better the job of shaving away hairs I did, the less this happened. I now - carefully - use a beard trimmer to cut away all hair before applying new setup.

I personally liked the 2-piece better than the 1-piece because I could change the bag out if I felt like it. Or easier to take off the bag & jump in the shower.

There are accessories like barrier strips that go around the bag and add more adhesive support. The work really well, almost too well because they can be difficult to remove.

Hi Ben, glad to hear you've had the surgery and are recovering so well! My son is newly 22 and ten months out from his surgery. A life without daily meds, pain, and missing out on fun times with friends is worth the recovery! Best of luck to you.

Recovery is going good, bruising is almost gone, the glue on top of the keyhole holes is almost off and stoma is going down in size. No aches or pains part from the small blockage I had. Was destroying a bag of Doritos without drinking much liquid. It's one of those times where you think "ill just have a few" then the packet is completely empty smile

I'm going to be talking to the surgeon about a J-pouch but if for whatever reason the internal pouch didn't work, I'd be perfectly fine with a stoma. It's a piece of cake to change/look after.

Ben,

If you get small blockages they normally resolve themselves with time. As you heal, the likelyhood of you getting blockages decreases. Right now your intestine is still swollen from the surgery so you need to be careful.

To clear a blockage either hot tea or coffee works. I found that grape juice or wine works the best. Some people use carbonated drinks too. Even if you don't have a blockage these things will make you empty your bag sooner/more often.

I felt great after getting my colon removed too, I said the same thing that I could go back to a bag if I ever had to. I prefer not to have more surgeries but would do it if advised.
