I've never had IRA, but was offered it by my cr surgeon and GI, though they warned me I might not be able to "hold" my stool like a normal person after that surgery, and because most of my colon have been resected, I would need to go to toilet six-seven times a day, and sometimes I might even need to "rush" to the toilet.
These sounded unpleasant to me, so I opted for the removal of my anus, rectum and sigmoid colon to have a permanent colostomy.
By the way, I have Crohn's and my rectum is heavily damaged due to long term severe inflammation, so they can't do a regular connection to my rectum for me.

ileoanal anastomosis.
