hello to all, i am jennyl, and i would love to hear from anyone who has or going to have an ileorecal anastomosis surgery? i was given that option last week. after living with an ileostomy the last 15 months.i've 7 surgerys for twisted intestines both large and small.leading to removal of my large colon. i am hoping you all will share any info to help me. thank you, jennyl best wishes to all would be great to lose the bag

I have a jpouch. I think the only person here with IRA, is NCOT, and she has Crohn's so it's not exactly the same situation, but all of us have had an external pouch at least temporarily. I personally like the freedom of not having to wear a appliance, but I wouldn't prefer it in trade for a lower quality of life. Did you ask what you can expect so far as QoL after? Do you have all of your small intestines or were parts removed? The less you have, the faster the output, the more trips to the bathroom, the less formed... having your rectum should make it much better though, so that's very positive. If you just have no colon, but you have your entire small intestine intact, and you have your rectum, you should do extremely well. Wishing you the best.

Yeah, I have an IRA - if you don't have Crohn's or UC, then IRA is preferable to a j-pouch. (Yes, I know I have Crohn's, but the Crohn's ruled me out for a j-pouch, so an IRA was all I could have.) You get to keep your rectum, you don't lose any of your small bowel, and the long-term outcome is slightly better than with a j-pouch.

The Crohn's came back in my rectum, so there's not much point in me talking about my experiences - having Crohn's is obviously gonna make things worse. Can your intestines twist again, or have they finally been sorted out on that front? 7 surgeries is a lot.

hi nice cup, so good to hear from you. this surgery will not prevent the twisting. its called volvulus usualy happens to infants my first bout was at 60 yrs. old very strange even to doctors. and it can happen at any time.i've been in hospital 21 times. thanks for listening, jennyl

I had an IRA in 2003 for indeterminate colitis, which now appears to be crohn's. It was a great success and I enjoyed 11 years of good health. Unfortunately, the disease has come back aggressively since the birth of my second child. It is likely I'll have a permanent ileostomy in the coming months.
The IRA has functioned well for me and the recovery (if memory serves me well) wasn't too hideous.

I've never had IRA, but was offered it by my cr surgeon and GI, though they warned me I might not be able to "hold" my stool like a normal person after that surgery, and because most of my colon have been resected, I would need to go to toilet six-seven times a day, and sometimes I might even need to "rush" to the toilet.

These sounded unpleasant to me, so I opted for the removal of my anus, rectum and sigmoid colon to have a permanent colostomy.

By the way, I have Crohn's and my rectum is heavily damaged due to long term severe inflammation, so they can't do a regular connection to my rectum for me.

hi shuffle, thank you for answering. i am sorry to hear the disease has come back to you after 11 yrs. sounds like you are way to young to have such a big problem. do you remember being able to make it to the toilet in time, could you feel it coming? they tell me i have control of the anus, but it still scares me. i wish you well with upcoming surgery, so sad. hope to hear from you. it great that so many are willing to tell thier stories. it helps others. take care, jenny

hello xy123, thanks for talking to me anyway. if you don"t have enough control it will not be a good idea for ira.they say i do but who really knows untill you try. i haven"t used my butt for 15 mo. crohns is a very bad thing to have. i like to hear from others best to you, jenny
