What we need is new technology. Better and stronger Stoma bags. Not less leaks, but no leaks. For two weeks, I observed every change, studied every bag and I have come to the conclusion that it isn't the doctors, It isn't the nurses, It is the product, Whether the manufacturer is Convetec, Hoiister or Corolplast, the product made available to to the stoma patient is as inferior as it gets. The very notion that any manufacturer could have the arrogance to think that they can sustain a person who has major colo- rectal surgery with a product that consists of a piece of plastic, that the patient needs cut themselves, is stunning. Saran wrap, velcro, paste and hair berrette's is not science, it is arts and crafts. And frankly, I find it dumbfounding, that the stoma community accepts the leak's and accepts the inferior products and accepts the excuse's, as the norm. These manufacturers actually sell product to deal with their leaks. . By the looks of things, this industry hasn't done Research and development since the 1950s. The stoma community is being taken for a ride. not by the doctors. not by the nurses, but by the manufacturers. After the week I went through and reading story after story about
others suffering with leaks, I have had it and I have every intention of holding Convetec, Hoiister and Corolplast, accountable, to force them to come up with better products. I will seek out others especially the rich and powerful who have family or friends suffering with leaks. I will contact my local congressman. I will go to consumer affairs. I will go to the FDA. Not for me, because mine is getting reversed in two months, but for those who follow me. I will make it my mission in life!
