So I am finally scheduled for j-pouch takedown in a month from now. I'm a 3 stepper, so I have experienced both the end and loop ileos. The loop has been so much more work than the end was, which I got surprisingly comfortable with. I'm pretty happy to get rid of it.

What can I expect when it comes to recovery time? I have a desk job, and hope to start working from home about 2 weeks after the surgery. Is this realistic? I have heard that the takedown surgery isn't as bad compared to the previous ones. I assume the main issue after this one is going to the bathroom a lot? When does it become manageable?

As a comparison, for both step 1 and step 2 I took about 2 weeks off before starting working from home.

If you don’t get any feedback from this section I’d try posting it in the UC forum... there’s a few over there with the j pouch! (I haven’t had this surgery but I heard it’s mostly just getting the bathroom trips to slow down and usually people have it pretty under control around 2 months after take down)

It really depends; I had a complication with mine and I was in the hospital for 11 days after my takedown due to a minor abscess. I was pretty banged up afterwards. Some people developed some scar tissue in their pouch that needs to be address (Strictures), this is very common.

The common time in the hospital after the takedown is 2-4 days. They usually let you go 24 hours after your first bm.

They use less anesthesia and pain meds for this surgery so you should be able to go to work sooner if there are no complications. It's a relatively small surgery.

In the case of 3 step surgery, #1 is end ileostomy and #2 loop ileostomy

Ok. So what is the Stoma? Is the end of small intestine sticking out of stomach wall??

So area that is my Stoma will be area attached to my butt in surgery 2?? If yes what area will be the Stoma?? How is area attached to butt?? Staples??

The area that is your stoma will be taken down to your butt but the stoma part will not be attached to it. They fold it to make it into the j shape then staple it so it will stay that way, then they take a tool to make a hole in the bottom of that newly formed pouch and that’s what they attach to your butt, in your second surgery you will get a completely new stoma that will divert stool from the j pouch so it can heal (loop ileostomy), on the third surgery the loop ileostomy is joined back together inside the body (fast and easy surgery).

If all goes according to plan, you should be able to get some work done from home for your job after 2 weeks. My takedown surgery was textbook and 3 weeks post op I took my kids out trick or treating.

Everyone heals at a different pace it seems.
