Back end issues since rectum removed

I had my rectum removed in Dec of 2017. I thought it had finally sealed up back there. But its not, I just had fluid come out it this morning. I also have had pain back there inside. Like a pressure pain. Is this normal? Will I have to have my back end resewn so it stays shut? I didnt think the Dr did a very good job in the first place. Please help me figure this out. Im so tired of dealing with this crap. Im happy with my ileostomy and glad that part is done and doing good.

Hello all! I had UP, surgeon removed my colon and rectum but left the anus. In his opinion, there were more complications when they sew you up. OK....four years after my operation, I started to feel pressure inside the anus. I had been getting a discharge and some bleeding from time to time from my vagina. This is over twenty years since I went through the change, so was quite concerning. Long story short, I was thoroughly checked out by my gyn. Nothing wrong in that department. The UC came back into the anus. My surgeon retired a year before these symptoms began, so I am now seeing another surgeon. He does yearly anal biopsies on me. So far, so good. Final analysis is that I probably have a recto vaginal fistula, but they cannot find it, so it is probably up under that rectal cuff. To go through another surgery would be a major operation and my surgeon said if I can live with the little discomfort I feel, and IF there is no malignancy (which, so far, is none) then to leave well enough alone.
Notbob, you hit the nail on the head. WHERE would all this gunk be going if everything was sewn up? I hate to think where. My surgeon said it probably would be seeping into my body and cause infection. This way, it comes OUT, even though it is seeping out through my vagina.
Am I upset with my original surgeon? Yes and no. He was the top man at Pennsylvania Hospital in Philly and knew his stuff. Also, this problem didn't start until four years after my operation. In his behalf, he did remove the diseased portion. He SHOULD have told me he was leaving the anus and I would have had a thorough discussion with him. He SHOULD have told me the disease may come back inside the anus. However, he did a great job, I have never had a problem with my stoma, thank God. I feel great and I am 71 yrs old.

Exactly Christine. I had one professional tell me that the discharge would be "absorbed" by the body. Umm no, not buying that. My plan is to leave well enough alone unless the surgeon or gastro tells me it's a serious issue. Perhaps get it monitored like you do. That's interesting that the disease lives on in the remaining organ even though it's no longer attached to the rest of the digestive system. Almost sounds like a parasite of some sort. Before my surgery I researched parasites along with a host of other possibilities on the possible cause of UC. My research was inconclusive; further I'm not medically trained and it's tough to research when you feel awful.

Glad you're doing well Christine. Still a bit concerned about the possible hernia, but the more I research it the more I think it's just a weakening in the muscle wall as opposed to a hernia. Still have yet to make my yearly follow-up appointment with either the gastro or the surgeon. I'll do that in a month or two. I've lost 8 pounds in the last couple months. Not exactly tearing it up, but eight pounds is eight pounds.

Marcell, my life is fantastic. I had a little bit of complications following my surgery. I was hospitalized for 11 days. However, I attribute that to my lousy health going into surgery. I was prednisone dependent for two years straight before going into surgery, confined to the house every day until the afternoon, when finally my diarrhea would cease. I missed weddings, funerals and my grandson's First Holy Communion. Let's say I HAD HAD IT! I was 63 yrs old, going on 64, so the surgery was no walk in the park. I had a wonderful surgeon!!! He kept me in the hospital until he felt I was well enough to be discharged. It took quite awhile before I felt well, but OOOOOOH it was great getting my life back. They say things happen for a reason. I suppose the reason God kept me here was to see our youngest daughter get married in 2012, and our two youngest grandsons, Santino, born in 2014 and William (named after my hubby) born last week, March 9th. Our oldest grandchild and only granddaughter, graduated high school three years ago and is in college, her brother (these two are from our oldest daughter) is graduating high school in June. All these main life events would not be possible for me to witness if I never had that operation. As a matter of fact, I probably would be six foot under. I thank the Lord every day.

Oh Roy.....I am so very sorry you are having such misery. My colorectal surgeon said I was not a candidate for J Pouch and I got the feeling he was not a big fan of J pouches either. I believe there are more complications with them than with the permanent ileos. With that said, there are still many, many people who have no problems with their J pouches. I think it depends on the surgeon, how much experience he has in performing that type of surgery and the condition of the patient going into surgery. Since I was prednisone dependent for several years and for two years straight, prior to surgery, I was unable to ween off the prednisone. I had prednisone induced diabetes and extremely high blood pressure due to that drug, in addition to my liver and pancreatic sky high abnormal levels. I consider myself just lucky to still be breathing.

I am still having issues inside my anus, still inflamed, but not unbearable. I hate to mention this, but you may have to go to a permanent ileo. What do you mean intestinal manifestations? You have no colon, correct?
