Can you get a colectomy without receiving blood? I just want to know.

You only receive blood if you start to bleed out or something

Bleeding out is not the only reason you would receive blood. Early on in my surgery, my surgeon decided that I was so malnourished and my blood was lacking so many things vital to health and healing, they went ahead and did a transfusion while I was on the table. I doubt it's common, but it does happen.

If I was to get surgery before my flare gets really bad I think they wouldn't consider it. I don't want to receive blood but I want my colon out.

When you sign the waiver it asks if you are willing to receive blood, you can check no but I think that would be a bad idea just in case something were to happen

Andrina I received a few blood transfusions before my surgery due to my colitis and being so sick but on the actual surgery day, I didn't need one and I was still anemic. So unless there is a problem I would assume you are ok to go without one.

I didn't need to receive blood during my surgery. But, would it be possible to bank some of your own blood, just in case?

This must be a religious issue? When I was in Pennsylvania Hospital in Philly, my first roommate was Jehovah's Witness and the only reason she came to PA Hospital was because they would honor her wishes not to receive blood. She was from Delaware and said Christiana Hospital would not do that for her. Best to ask about the hospital's policy. I had a total proctocolectomy and didn't need to receive blood during or after my operation.

I think I might have signed something, but I didn't receive any. It's good that you're looking into these issues, but I think you're jumping the gun a little, you don't need surgery. Take it easy. You will recoup smile

It doesn't hurt to be prepared. I'm giving myself time but I want to be prepared.
