Rectum removal

UC since 2014. Last year June 2017 I have a sub-total colectomy. I have been unfortunate with hospital visits since and had a parastomal hernia, which eventually resulted in an emergency operation in February this year as my bowel was strangulated. I had to have some bowel removed and to be quite honest it was touch and go as to whether I would still be here. Obviously I am. . Tomorrow I am going into hospital to have my remaining bit of bowel removed along with my anus/ rectum.

I'm doing this is I have had constant flare symptoms with the small piece of bowel left for if I wanted a reversal. I decided that I really don't want to put myself through a reversal and would really like the UC to be gone once and for all. I'm also having my stoma which they formed in the emergency situation re-sited as it is not in a very good place at the mo., i.e. over on the left hand side. I have also developed another hernia which my surgeon said he will try and repair at the same time tomorrow.

My question is has anyone that the bottom removed and sewn up? If so what is the recovery like and how long were you in hospital.

Just reading this now, so you've probably had the operation already. My surgeon, forever what reason, left just a bit of anus tissue intact after removing my rectum and colon in 2010. Before that, I had suffered with ulcerative proctitis for twelve years. When I asked him why he left that bit of anus (which four years later AND after this surgeon had retired, became ulcerated), he explained there are more complications when the anus is removed. I was fine for four years, then started experiencing some discomfort and pressure inside the anus. Long story short, the disease came back inside the anus AND the doctors all concur that I have a recto vaginal fistula up under the rectal cuff which is causing some spotting and discharge from the vagina. My present colorectal surgeon does yearly biopsies, while I am under anesthesia so no pain, to make sure there is nothing else going on down there. My gyn recently had me undergo a transvaginal ultrasound, to rule out anything amiss in that area. So far, so good. I have been using a rectal cream and it works beautifully!! I still have the vaginal problem, but since there is nothing serious going on, I am leaving well enough alone. Life is wonderful since my operation!!! I have NO regrets and I certainly am NOT going under any more surgery to remove that anus.
