Had successful takedown surgery 3 weeks ago today. Bowel has been good. Started to get bladder discomfort though. Just got worse. Saw surgeon for post op visit yesterday, just as well, because I was in a lot of discomfort. He thinks it's a uti and started me on antibiotics straight away. What worries me is , when the uti goes away, I'll still have the discomfort , because it is unbearable. I did have some inflammatory material stuck to bladder, but my surgeon, who,is awesome, and I must admit everything he has said has been accurate, doesn't think this is a problem. There was no catheter used either. I pointed out that bladder was fine when I had the bag, but as he said, everything has "woken up" down there, and I have been through a lot of surgeries. Anyone else had urinary tract infection after takedown?

Was this a 3 step procedure?

No. Had bowel resection on 10 th may. In hospital 2 weeks. That's the big one ( for me Anyway) . Iliostomy 3 months. Reversal 3 weeks ago. Bowel is working very well considering the mess it was in before the first op.

I am sorry for your pain!
I had significant bladder discomfort after my Step 1 surgery (colon removal, J pouch formed, loop ileo put in) but by the time I connected with a doctor about
it, it was beginning to resolve itself, so I never followed up on meds.
Since my reversal surgery, 2 weeks ago tomorrow, I've had some uncomfortable sensations regarding bladder but nothing dramatic. What your doc said makes me feel better, about
everything waking up down there!
How long have you been on the antibiotics? Is there reason to think the discomfort will sill be present, or is that just your worry...?

I think I'm worried about
it because I had a large ball of inflammatory material stick to it when surgeon did first op. But I had no discomfort when I had my bag, so that does suggest what the surgeon said makes sense. I have also suffered vaginal atrophy ( a menopausal problem) very unpleasant. I have been on antibiotics 2 days. Usually with infection, they kick in quite quickly, but I am still having some discomfort. Almost like a bladder or urethral, spasm when I use my bowel. It may resolve, I only had surgery 3 weeks ago, but I didn't notice any problem when I came home, but of course, my bowel has " woken up a lot more since then! I do hope it resolves. After going through all of that, and have a good bowel again, only to have a dis functional bladder would be so heartbreaking. Thanks so much for your reply.

Hey, SGirl, I have dealt with the vaginal atrophy also.
I'v been on an estrogen cream (topical, weekly) for the last few years but to be honest I stopped it when colon surgery was scheduled. Wow, fer that first surgery, I had burning and discomfort even when I walked. I restarted the cream, and also bought an OTC moisturizer (Replens.) Tha all helped. And I applied Vagisil externally.
Chemo started, and I let all that lapse again...and now, after my second surgery, I have had some recurrence. I am out of the Rx cream, and would need to see the ob/gyn to get it renewed.... not sure I'm up for that yet! I've been applying the external creams that they have helped, but ... what a bummer that yet another body system needs constant maintenance!
All this may or may not be relevant to what you are dealing with, but I've never had the chance to talk to another woman about
the atrophy thing, and I really appreciate that! So..... thanks!

Hi songlady . It is good to talk about
the atrophy because people do not have a clue unless they have experienced it. It's horrible! My doc said its really only quite recently that it's recognised. I can get vagifem from my local GP luckily. ( esterogen pessaries) My bladder still not right. I'm doing the 2 week load that you start off with, I don't know if your familiar with this? Hopping I get relief soon. I hope it's that and not bladder damage. Good to talk to a fellow sufferer. Thank you.

Hi, Here’s my experience. Had my permanent ileo many yrs ago, no problem with the bladder. Then in 2016 had a hernia repair and they removed the last of the rectum and sewn shut. Still had moderate inflammation from UC but nothing was bothering me. Wish I had not gotten this done. I started having problems with my bladder right away. Could hardly leave the house it was so bad. Dr’s said maybe nerve damage, maybe from the bladder shifting not sure. It has been over two yrs and has gotten much better but I’m still not back to normal. I have done acupuncture and Chinese herbs. The herbs helped the most. I also take cranberry extract, and pumpkin seed extract. That also helps. It seems over time it has also improved on its own just takes a while.

When I had a problem one time with pain in thw bladder area. My chiro was an acupuncturist and did a acupuncture treament. He said the nerves sometimes can have a problem calming down. It was a difference between night and day. I dont know if this will help you, but its worth a try. Stay on top of this and be persistant. Hope your feeling better soon.
