I have had my stoma for over eight years and in all that time experienced on one or two minor blockages. However, a few nights ago, I ate some popcorn. I thought I chewed it thoroughly, but I guess not. OMG, the next day I experienced such bad pain in my stomach and it seemed to radiate all over the upper region and into the lower region. I have a permanent ileo, BTW. I drank some tea and as much water as I could get down. It finally broke through around midnight of the following night. I still don't feel 100%, still a bit nauseated. The pain was pretty rough. Anyone else ever experience this?

I've had my ileostomy for almost 12 years and have not had a blockage of any kind. Lately, I've been craving some of those old favorites like popcorn, corn on the cob, etc., but your report on the partial blockage shakes me back to reality. I guess I can live without them. Thanks for the wake up call.

Tom.....I didn't mention the corn on the cob that I have been eating quite a bit of lately. LOL. I live in Jersey, so corn on the cob and fresh Jersey tomatoes are a summer staple. I am STILL having some issues, although the stoma is working fine. I haven't had corn on the cob or pop corn since that episode last week, but it really set me back. So, word to the wise, stay away from it!!

I had it with my loop.

You've done really well with your ileo. I am surprised that after all this time, that happened... It's good that it passed on it's own.

I wonder how long you can wait without seeking treatment. When I had it with my loop, I was cramping a ton, and nothing was outputting. I had awful anxiety over it. I looked it up and it said to go to the hospital, but I really didn't want to go, so I took a hot shower and relaxed, finally I fell asleep, and when I woke up, everything was moving again.

Notsosickly, good to hear everything passed through ok. I have been having upper gastric issues for several months. I went to a GI doctor (not my former guy who refused to send me to a surgeon, this is a new lady doctor I found). She placed me on Prilosec (Omeprizole). I felt ok for awhile, so stopped taking it...that's me! The discomfort came back and my family doctor told me to double up on the dose, so I did. Ok for a while longer, now acting up again. So, guess I better have things checked out. I had a friend who passed from pancreatic cancer last year and she was my age, so that sort of scares me. I'm 72, no spring chicken.

When I had my end ileostomy I had blockages weekly. The longest I had no stool come into my bag was just over 2 days. The pain is horrible even with very large doses of morphine and fentanyl it just hurts too much. I had to keep a catheter tube inside my stoma at all times to prevent it from blocking up. I would have to manually remove my stool every few days when I felt like my stoma was not working using a syringe to pull the stool through the catheter. This would happen regardless of what I ate which is why I had my second surgery pushed so forward. I became so scared of food I would only have 1 meal a day, sometimes not even that. The 1 meal was usually just some French Fries as I couldn't stomach anything else sad So I lived off Fortisips/Ensures.
