So, im 18 (& male) and have been in and out of the hospital for 4 years... I went for the reconnect, and thats when i really went downhill. My J pouch and rectum are quite inflammed, causing lot of pain. I should be getting my rectum removed around late December if everything goes okay, just don't know if i can wait that long..

The one thing that is causing me to lose sleep is if sexual function will be stripped post-op. I've tried looking into it, but havent been able to find much. I have read that the younger you are, the better the nerves will re-grow, so i got that going for me, i guess? I honestly don't know how i could cope with losing this, as i am only 18. It makes me feel helpless and worthless, big time.

if you did have your rectum removed, how drastically did your sexual abilities alter?

It is weird that you have a rectum. Most of us have it removed with the jpouch procedure and the pouch becomes the "holding tank". Inflammation in the pouch can have a variety of causes. Have you had biopsies? What did they show? have you tried medication? Some people use antibiotics or biologics to treat pouch inflammation.

If you want to go through with a perm ileo, i completely understand, but i don't think it's your only option. You may have medical options to treat the inflammation. Do your parents go with you to the GI/Surgeon? Who's made the recommendation for a perm?

That said, I've seen a few people here decide to have pouch removal due to poor function or inflammation. All of them worry about sexual function, but I haven't actually seen anyone face it. It is definitely something to consider, but i don't think it's so common that you can expect it. I would imagine it is fairly rare. You should ask your surgeon for statistics and make a decision once you have accurate nnumbers. We do have one past member who wanted to go back to ileo, but was scared of sexual malfunction, and he opted to keep his rectum for the time being and go to a loop ileo.

I'm a female and have found sex okay down there. It's been awhile now that I've had to have the wound reopened in Sept. But I definitely look forward to that reconnection. I would express your concerns with your Dr. Hope this helps.
