waste out of rear with a ileostomy???

   I have been diagnosed with Crohn's disease since i was 23....now im 42....i have had 8 surgeries for this since 06.....i now have a ileostomy and i empty my bag within 30 mins of eating or drinking....i go to the bathroom more now then i did before all this.  Anyways my question is...My colon (what is left of it) is hanging off to the side inside of me sewed up, but i still have some type of bowel movement out the rear almost daily.  Sometimes its alot or just a little and almost always bloody.  My surgeon was worried but my gastro said that it is supposed to do that and it bleeds cause of the ileostomy.  I dont understand this and i was wondering if anyone has had this same problem?  The waste that comes out is gray and bloody but doesnt really stink, just smells funny....any clues?????

it's normal to have discharge from the anus even with an ileostomy. the remaining colon/rectum still produces mucous all the time and it should come out. totally normal. but when you say blood, do you mean a lot of it? or is it just a tiny bit when you wipe? a tiny bit doesn't necessarily mean there's a problem, but if it's a lot, better have the surgoen do a scope on you to make sure there isn't an infection or any other causes for bleeding.

how far are you from surgery? maybe it's only blood from surgery that is supposed to drain now and will stop soon? don't know, just a thought. but as i said, if it's a lot of blood, or if the bleeding persists, contact your surgeon.

sometimes there is very little blood and other times it is quite a bit...my gastro told me the bleeding is due to not having the proper bacteria in my colon because of the ileostomy and only a reversal would fix that issue, but my surgeon said that since i have almost died twice in the last couple of years because of my colon just kept coming apart, he refered to it as a ground meat roll, and said that a reversal would just try to kill me again so we have decided that the ileostomy stays unless a cure comes up in the future....but thank you for the info...the gastro told me about the discharge but i had never heard anyone else mention it till now...thanks again...

Is it an end ileo or a loop ileo. With loop ileo it is possible that some poop can slide back down through the colon into the rectum. Then there is also the mucous that Hodaya mentioned.

Or is you colon disconnected from your rectum totally in which case poop could not slide backward through the other end of the ileo loop and reach the rectum due to no colon in between small bowel and rectum. If this is the case, it is just mucous. Have the blood issue checked though. Rosemary

Pretty much since my surgery a couple of years ago(I had a colostomy) I've had a similar issue. Mucus collects and every 2-4 days i have to "go to the bathroom" to drain it out. I think for me it's a combination of a diseased rectum that is creating excess mucus and the the rectum generating some normally. Who knows. Sometimes there is some blood but not too much.

I have some discharge each day and I'm completely detached at the moment (colon removed, temp ileo, waiting for surgery to create j-pouch). I will sometimes see a little blood, but nothing much. It's just the remaining rectum creating mucous and it has to come out. My surgeon's nurse said not to worry unless there is significant amounts of blood or clots of blood.

I too have some discharge up to 3 times a day with some Crohn's like cramping. It's always a white-ish-yellow colour and very liquid and odd smelly. I have a loop ileo with colon still in place
I haven't had my follow up yet with my surgent/GI but I will mention it to him.

When I had my loop and then end ileo I had so much discharge that I was going to toilet almost as much as before I had the ileo which sort of defeated the object and as I never wanted it reversed they decided it was better to remove colon, rectum and anus as leaving it in situ but never being connected could increase risk of colon cancer.

I decided 2 days after having my loop ileo done at 20 yo that I never wanted it reversed, good job as found out from surgeon later that colon completely shot to pieces, but he said cause of my age I had to come to that decission myself, he was just surprised how quickly I said I never wanted it reversed. Easy decission for me but each has to feel comfortable with what they decide.

I am quadriplegic and I have an ileostomy since the las6t 2 decades just recently there has been blood and it looks like after birth coming from my rectum

Crazeequad, if you are having that much come out and it's clots then please seek medical help. It is normal to have a small bit of blood mixed in with the discharge but how you have described it sounds like to much. There might be something else going on. Please get it checked.

I have an emergency ileostomy cuz of a perforation in my cecum...
I read about rectal release and wondered why in the first week nothing happened to me...
Wondered no more, when suddenly it happened while i was draining my bag...not
As small amount as the book said it would be either...luckily my nurse helped with
Everything...then told me it happens daily, just the rectum's job, just not like what
Happened that day...there are things to look for like changes in color, blood, or clots etc...
Wearing big poise or other pads keep it in check and save undies smile

After having a total colectomy, it happened to me, initially it was every few days. Then it progressed to almost every day at a certain time. There was cramping and the urge to go. I'm fairly certain it was my surgeon (or hi) who diagnosed it as diversion colitis. After the proctectomy it had stopped, along with the cramping.
