I was in the pre-op area today, IV's running when the surgeon came in, took one look at my ileostomy bag and said that I had not done the appropriate pre-op procedures. I showed him my instructions from his office and assured him that I had done exactly as told. Regardless. he said the small intestine had not been cleaned out and he was not comfortable doing the surgery. I was sent home and told to contact his office to reschedule.
He is leaving for vacation early next week and his only opening is next Monday. He said he would not do this surgery and then leave town because he does not expect it to be a quick or simple procedure due to the original surgery being so difficult and life threatening. As a nurse, I really can't argue with his reasons but it doesn't stop me from being very upset.
I will not be out of work until mid to late August and I've already been out for nearly 7 weeks. Thankfully the people at hospice are very understanding and simply say "you have to take care of yourself Cheryl" and assure me that my job is safe.
Just wanted to vent I guess. It's been a very upsetting day and evening.
